Chhalaang tells the story of Mahender Singh Hooda(Rakummar Rao) who is lovingly called Montu by his family and friends. He lives with his father, Kamlesh Singh Hooda and is a PT teacher at his childhood school. Montu is so totally disinterested in his job that spends the PT periods eating samosas under the tree, while the students catch up on their homework.
Montu is attracted to the new computer teacher in his school Neelima Mehra.

Life takes a turn in Montu’s life when the school principal ( Ila Arun) , hires a far more qualified PT teacher (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) as his superior. Unlike Montu, the new PT teacher has a college degree and a determination to succeed. Montu faces competition from the new senior PT teacher, Inder Mohan Singh, who excels where Montu performs weakly. When Montu objects to the new PT teacher's style of teaching, he and Inder have an argument. Soon, he offers to compete against Singh in a three-round contest, which pits Montu’s students against his. The winner gets to keep the job. The rest of the film is about how Montu prepares his team for the contest and about whether his team is able to pose a challenge to Singh's team.

The film begins on a slow note with the first half focussing on Montu’s total
disinterest in his job so much so that he spends the PT periods eating samosas under the tree and is happy to lend his PT periods to teachers of other subjects. The first half also focuses on Montu’s interactions with the
school’s Hindi teacher, Shukla with the two of them seen pondering on life’s bigger questions . There are a few scenes of Montu trying to woo the school's new computer teacher Neelima or 'Neelu'.

The proceedings, however, gather pace after the arrival of the new PT teacher Inder Mohan Singh and his attempts to woo Neelu. Facing a threat to his job and to the love of his life, Montu picks up his life and decides to prove himself as a worthy PT teacher . From herein begins his journey of turning a team of 'Losers' into a winning combination through some innovative techniques.

Luv Ranjan and Aseem Arora need to be complemented for their brilliant script and their sharp screenplay. The second half of the film is emotionally charged and keeps the audience constantly engaged. The finale of the film is brilliant with its strong inspirational content.

As a director, Hansal Mehta again impresses with the inspirational story of a directionless person finding his calling as a PT teacher. He manages to draw excellent performances from the cast including Rakummar Rao, Saurabh Shukla and Satish Kaushik.

As an actor, Rajkummar Rao continues to impress with his brilliant act as Montu who makes a transformation from a disinterested PT teacher to one who finds his calling . ' Chhallaang' also features stellar acts from Saurabh Shukla and Satish Kaushik. Nushrratt Bharuccha looks pretty as Neelima, the love of Montu’s life.

In short, 'Chhalaang' is an inspiring tale with brilliant direction by Hansal Mehta and heartwarming performances by Saurabh Shukla, Rajkummar Rao.

Rating: 4/5- one for story and screenplay, one for direction, one for the film's inspirational theme and one for performance by the cast
