Tamil Film Soorarai Pottru joins OSCARS race under General Category

In another fillip to India's Oscar dreams, Tamil Film Soorarai Pottru, story of a former air force captain who endeavours to and successfully starts an airline company that's affordable to all at a very low price, has  joined the OSCARS under General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories!

Taking to social media, the film's co producer Rajshekhar Pandian said, 'Happy Republic Day! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS under General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score & other categories! The film has been made available in the Academy Screening Room today .'

Soorarai Pottru  has been directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga, under their respective banners 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment. 

The film, which stars Suriya, Paresh Rawal, and Aparna Balamurali with Urvashi, Mohan Babu, and Karunas amongst others in supporting roles, is being streamed on Amazon Prime video

Trade sources said that due to covid, this year OTT releases have been allowed entry. Nominations will be announced on March 15, 2021.

Partly inspired by events from the life of Simplifly Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath,   Soorarai Pottru's was to released in theatres. However, its theatrical release was postponed several times due to post-production delays and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on November 12 last year on eve of Diwali festival, simultaneously with its dubbed versions in Kannada and Malayalam under the same title and in Telugu as Aakasam Nee Haddu Raa .
Nedumaaran is a former air force captain who wants to start an airline company that's affordable to all at a very low price. After facing stiff competition from other airline rivals and after challenging all the hurdles set by them, Nedumaaran and his team of former air force captains finally manage to pull over the tide and launch their airline company- 'Deccan air'. They are being helped in this endeavour by their village people, their family members and by certain like minded good businessmen who are dedicated to do service for the society.

Soorarai Pottru received positive reviews from critics who , praised the major technical aspects of the film and also appreciated Suriya's performance and Sudha's direction. Soorarai Pottru was selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.


The entry of Soorarai Pottru in the Oscars in the general category comes close on the heels of Bittu, a short film from India based on a real life incident of an accidental poisoning at school in Northern India in 2013, joining the race for the Oscars in the Short film category.

Directed by Karishma Dev Dube, Bittu is backed by Newly formed cinema collective Indian Women Rising, an organization set up by Ekta Kapoor, joint MD and creative director, Balaji Telefilms, Balaji Motion Pictures and ALTBalaji; Guneet Monga, founder and CEO of Sikhya Entertainment; and author and filmmaker Tahira Kashyap Khurrana to support and empower Indian female talent in cinema,
