Music lovers pay tribute to O P Nayyar on his death anniversary

Music lovers across the country today paid tributes to O P Nayyar, who carved a niche for himself in the Hindi film industry with his mellifluous songs for films like Aar Paar(1954) ,Baaz (1953), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955)
, C.I.D. (1956), Naya Dara, Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Howrah Bridge (1958), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964),
Mere Sanam (1965) and Baharen Phir Bhi Aayegi (1966) and Salaam Bombay! (1988).

A music composer, singer-songwriter, music producer, and musician, Omkar Prasad Nayyar established a niche for himself in Hindi films in 1950s and 1960s with his rhythmic and Mellifluous tunes .

What is unique about O P Nayyar that he carved a niche for himself in the music world even though he did not work with the reigning  Bollywood female singer Lata Mangeshkar. Nayyar worked extensively with singers Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi.

Born in Lahore in  British India (present Pakistan), O P Nayyar started his career by composing the background score for Kaneez (1949).

Making his debut as music composer with 's Aasmaan(1952)  (produced by Dalsukh M. Pancholi) , Nayyar went on to compose music for Chham Chhama Chham (1952) and Baaz (1953). Film producer, director and actor Guru Dutt enlisted him to compose and conduct music for Aar Paar (1954), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955) and C.I.D. (1956). Nayyar never worked with Lata Mangeshkar, though her song Saari Saari Raat Teri Yaad Satayein from the 1958 film Aji Bas Shukriya was used in the 1973 Hindi film Taxi Driver, for which he was the music director

Nayyar composed music for films featuring  Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Dharmendra, Shammi Kapoor, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajit, Feroz Khan, Bharat Bhushan, Madhubala, Asha Parekh, Sadhana, Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore, Rajshree, Rekha, Ameeta and Shyama. In addition to Hindi films, Nayyar composed for Neerajanam in Telugu.

O P Nayyar was known for his close association with Asha Bhosle 



He was known for association with Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi with whom he did several films in the 50s and the 60s.

O P Nayyar died on He died on January 28 2007 and was survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.
