Godzilla Vs Kong rocks the box office in India, earns over Rs 6 crore on opening day
By Rajesh Ahuja
Even as Bollywood films Roohi and Mumbai Saga struggle at the box office following a worsening covid situation in the country with a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in many states, especially Maharashtra, the Hollywood film Godzilla Vs Kong has taken an excellent opening in India, earning over Rs 6 crore on its opening day in India, the biggest opening for any film released in recent weeks.
Released in India by Warner Bros, Godzilla Vs Kong did outstanding business in the South Indian markets while performing poorly in Mumbai and other parts of India, which have been witnessing a surge in covid cases in last two weeks.
Trade experts say that the excellent opening taken by the film is largely due to its good performance in states of South India, where the situation vis a vis covid is somewhat better compared to that in Mumbai and some North Indian states.
Makers of the film said that the box office performance of the film is commendable considering that it released on a week day(Wednesday).
Godzilla Vs Kong takes an excellent opening of over Rs 6 crore in India |
Earnings of Rs 6 crore on its opening day in India by Godzilla Vs King is the biggest opening for any film released in INOX thearres in recent weeks.
Expressing happiness on performance by Godzilla Vs Kong, Rajender Singh Jyala, Chief Programming Officer, INOX Leisure Ltd, said 'Godzilla Vs. Kong has taken the biggest opening for any Hollywood and Bollywood film released at INOX post-pandemic. In spite of a mid-week release, shows of the film were full at most of INOX cinemas. Fight sequences between the two giants are superb in the film and the audience is enjoying it. Advance booking trends are indicating that Godzilla Vs. Kong will have one of the biggest opening weekends,”
Godzilla Vs Kong boasts an ensemble star cast including – Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza Gonzalez, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler, and Demian Bichir.
It is notable that due to a surge in covid cases in many states especially Maharashtra, Bollywood films Roohi and Mumbai Saga, which were released in cinemas during this period, had a below average performance at the box office.
While Roohi earned just Rs 14 crore from Cinema halls across the country in its opening week, Mumbai Saga has managed to collect only Rs 12 crore in its first 6 days.
The poor earnings of these films is being attributed to the sudden surge in covid cases in Maharashtra and other states like Punjab, leading to poor footfalls at the Cinema halls.
Infact , the present situation has led makers of the much awaited makers of film Haathi Mere Saathi to postpone release of their film's Hindi version, which was scheduled to release on March 26.
The present situation has also put a question mark on release of mega starrers scheduled for release in the next couple of months, including Bunty Aur Babli2, Chehre, Sooryavanshi and Salman Khan starrer Radhe.
