Rising COVID-19 cases: After Haathi Mere Saathi & Bunty Aur Babli2, Chehre also postponed, Q mark on other mega starrers

By Rajesh Ahuja

With the spurt in covid cases in many states in the country adversely impacting collections of Bollywood films Roohi and Mumbai Saga, makers of films scheduled for release in the coming weeks are deferring release of their films till the situation is conducive for screening of the films in cinemas.

Shortly after the makers of  Haathi Mere Saathi and Bunty Aur Babli2 postponed the release of the  films, makers of the Amitabh Bachchan Emraan Hashmi starrer Chehre  have announced an indefinite postponement of release of the films.

In a statement issued today, the makers of Chehre said, 'due to rising cases of COVID 19 and new guidelines for cinemas, we are unable to release our movie Chehre on 9th April and have decided to postpone until further notice. We have received an overwhelming response on our trailer and we are grateful for all the love and support. We have decided to bring Chehre to audience theatrically when the environment is more conducive for the experience. See you in cinemas very soon, until then stay safe and healthy! Cover your Chehre with a mask and don’t forget to use sanitiser.”

The film was scheduled to release in cinemas on April 9.

Makers of Chehre postpone release of the film

Directed by Rumy Jafry, Chehre features Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles.

It also features Krystle D’Souza, Annu Kapoor, Raghubir Yadav and Siddhanth Kapoor in key roles.

Chehre will have Amitabh Bachchan play the role of a lawyer while Emraan Hashmi will play a businessman.

The film will also mark the Bollywood debut of actress Krystle D'Souza.

Makers of Bunty Aur Babli2, the sequel to Bunty Aur Babli had a few days ago also postponed its release.

The film, which features Rani Mukherjee and saif Ali Khan in lead roles,  was scheduled for release on April 23.

Makers of Bunty Aur Babli2 had earlier postponed the release of the film

Postponrment of release of Chehre and Bunty aur Babli2 due to present situation in the country with sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra and other states like Punjab comes after Eros international had last week postponed the release of the Hindi version of its much awaited film Haathi Mere Saathi.

The Hindi version of the Rana Daggubati starrer was scheduled for release on March 26.

The Tamil and Telugu version of Haathi Mere Saathi were , however, released on the scheduled date of March 26.

Infact the worsening covid situation in the country has put a question mark on release of mega starrers scheduled for release in cinemas next month. These include  Sooryavanshi, Satyamev Jayate 2 and the Salman Khan starrer Radhe.

Infact, , keeping in view the fresh surge in Covid cases in the country, the home ministry today issued fresh guidelines for the states, which will be in force till April 30.

It now remains to be seen whether the makers of the upcoming mega starrers stick to their release date or decide to postpone release of their films.

Trade analysts say that the postponement of big starrers due to fresh covid Surge has plunged the Hindi film industry into a major crisis.

They say that if makers of other mega starrers also postpone the release of the films, it would be a major blow to the film business.

Trade observer Girish Johar says that if key Hindi announced releases postpone again now, it will be very very difficult to recover from the dent.

'As presently,Bollywood's traction is at its all time new low. Coupled with rising cases, postponing releases will hurt the cinema business and put the film trade in a very perplexed and catch 22 situation,'he said.

Rise in COVID-19 cases in the country has adversely affected collections of Roohi, Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina, which released in the previous weeks.

The only film that has earned good revenues is the Hollywood film Godzilla Vs Kong, which has earned c,one to Rs 30 crore in its opening weekend. However, a major portion of the collections of Hollywood film have come from the South Indian markets, where the situation vis a vis covid is somewhat better compared to that in Maharashtra and North Indian states.

Trade sources say that the postponement of release of Chehre and Bunty aur Babli2 is most likely to be followed by more postponements.
