I loved the pairing of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimal: Saira Banu


The two had a brilliant on screen chemistry, says the yesteryear's Bollywood actress

Bollywood icon Dilip Kumar may have had a successful on screen pairing with several legendary actresses during his glorious career in Hindi films spanning over five decades but for the thespian's wife Saira Banu , the pairing between Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala was among her favourites.

Reminiscing about Vyjayantimala and her successful on screen pairing with Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu says, 'I always loved the pairing between Sahib (Dilip Kumar) and Vyjayantimalaji.''

'The pair has given the maximum number of hits together and my all time favourite is the classic 'Ganga Jumna,'Saira Banu said a trip down memory lane on the occasion of Vyjayantimala's birthday.

Saira Banu said that Vyjayantimala did a fabulous job as Dhanno in 'Ganga Jumna'.

'She did a fabulous job as Dhanno in 'Ganga Jumna'. Sahib worked very hard on her diction to record the purbi dialogues on tape with the correct pronunciation and dialect,'Saira Banu said.

Talking about the on screen chemistry between Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala,  Saira Banu,  who Lovingly referred to her as 'Akka', Saira Banu said, 'there was a certain understanding between Sahib and Akka, and the on screen chemistry worked in their favour.'

Akka once quoted that she learnt a lot while working with Sahib; it was amazing watching him sink into a character and become oblivious of all else.''

Saira Banu said that after a brief phase of misunderstanding between Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala,  she brought the two of them together to patch up as friends again.

'Once there came an unfortunate misunderstanding between them, and somehow after shooting for 'Ram Aur Shyam ' for a few days, she was replaced.

Each of them would avoid meeting the other's gaze during the meetings between our families. This went on until I brought the two of them together to patch up as friends again. That was quite a feat.,'Saira Banu said.

'After this smooth sailing,  Akka and her son Suchendra Bali would always visit us at home whenever traveling from Madras,'Saira Banu added.

The pairing of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala was among the favourite on screen pairings of the 1950s and 1960s . Infact,  compared to other actresses of the Golden Era,  Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala featured together in the most number of films.
