Tamil period drama Sarpatta Parambarai streaming on Amazon Prime Video from today

Amid uncertainty on reopening of theatres across India due to continued prevalence of second wave of COVID-19 and looming threat of a third wave,  an increasing number of filmmakers are going for direct OTT release of their films.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from today is the Tamil Language period drama Sarpatta Parambarai,  a film revolving around the clash between two clans.

Set in the 70s, Sarpatta Parambarai  showcases the culture and lives of the boxing clans that existed in North Madras in the 70s. At the centre of the story lies two rival clans - Sarpatta and Idiyappa, who are constantly locking horns in a duel to safeguard the pride of their respective clans.

In Sarpatta Parambarai, two groups come to blows for their pride and honor. The film has boxing at its heart with political and social commentary of a bygone era running through the narrative.

The film, with a backdrop of sports, illustrates the nuances of an era, rife with cultural and social changes.


Tamil period drama Sarpatta Parambarai streaming on Amazon Prime Video from today 




Directed by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Pa.Ranjith and produced by Neelam Productions of PA Ranjith  and K9 Studios, the period sports drama stars Aryaa, Dushara Vijayan, John Kokken, Kalaiyarasan, Pasupathy, John Vijay and Santosh Prathap.


The film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release.  However, the makers decided to directly release it on OTT due to prevailing  uncertainty on reopening of theatres across India due to  Covid-19 pandemic.

The film has already made a business of Rs 35 crore  prior to its release, including the satellite television rights and Hindi dubbing rights of the film.

Sarpatta Parambarai was originally slated for release on  August 12 during the Independence Day weekend. However, on 8 July 2021, Amazon Prime Video India announced a series of the original shows and contents for the platform's July release, to coincide the Prime Day celebrations, with Sarpatta Parambarai being scheduled for release on  July 22.
