Not Sunny Deol but Rishi Kapoor was the first choice for Nasir Hussain's Manzil Manzil

Think of the 1984 romantic thriller Manzil Manzil and almost immediately the image of Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia comes to mind.
For cinelovers, the successful Nasir Hussain film may today seem unimaginable without Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia but when the film was conceived, Rishi Kapoor was the filmmaker's choice for the male lead, it has been revealed in Rishi Kapoor's autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor uncensored.
Writing in his autobiography, Rishi Kapoor said that after the box office failure of Nasir Hussain's Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai, which featured him and Padmini Kolhapure in the lead roles, he had avoided making any contact with the filmmaker as he couldn't face making another film with him.
'I was so guilt ridden about the debacle of Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai that I avoided all contact with him(Nasir Hussain). I couldn't face making another film with him. He took my behavior as an indication that I did not want to work with him again.
So he moved on and made Manzil Manzil (1984) with Sunny Deol and Dimple Kapadia although he had written it with me and Dimple in mind. Both his nephew Aamir Khan, who was his assistant at that time, and his son Mansoor confirmed this to me,'Rishi Kapoor said.

The actor said that another reason for his avoiding contact with Nasir Hussain was fact that he was doing Saagar with Ramesh Sippy.
'Around the same time, I was starting a new film Saagar(1985) with director Ramesh Sippy and Co stars Dimple and Kamal Haasan. I admit I was perhaps distracted by the idea with the more successful director. Nasir sa'ab was a Pathan and he refused to wait around for a response. He went ahead and cast Sunny Deol instead.
Pancham would ask me many times why I wasn't meeting Nasir sa'ab but I'd always use my busy schedule as an excuse and wriggle out of an honest answer,'Rishi Kapoor said.
The actor's dilly dallying on the matter ended his professional relationship with Nasir Hussain, with whom he had worked in the hugely successful Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin and Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai .
Rishi Kapoor said that end of his professional relationship with Nasir Hussain, with whom he had an extremely satisfying relationship in the late 70s, is one of the biggest regrets of his life.
'It was in the late 1970s that the extremely satisfying relationship came to fruition for me. It quickly went from being strictly professional to warmly personal and was marked by a great deal of mutual affection and respect. And it has remained one of my biggest regrets that it ended the way it did. I guess I have to take the wrap for it,'the actor said.
Released in 1984, Manzil Manzil, a romantic drama directed by Nasir Hussain, starred Sunny Deol in the lead opposite Dimple Kapadia. It featured Danny Denzongpa, kulbhushan Kharbanda and Asha Parekh in pivotal roles.
