I have always celebrated my imperfections; Radhika Madan
By Rajesh Ahuja
As a teenager, she got scant attention from boys of her age because of her unibrow. Then as a grown up trying her luck in films , Radhika Madan faced several rejections because of her imperfect shape and size.
Notwithstanding the lack of attention from boys in her teenage years because of her unibrow and rejections from filmmakers due to her imperfect shape and size, Radhika Madan has always celebrated her imperfections rather than shunning them.
Radhika Madan features in the anthology Feels like ishq on Netflix |
In a chat ahead of release of Feels like ishq, an anthology of cute love at first sight stories that is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on July 23, Radhika Madan said that notwithstanding the world's idea of perfection, she loves the fact that she is imperfectly perfect.
While as a child, Radhika says that she was happy in her own wedding her own thing, as a teenager, despite lack of attention from boys because of her unibrow, she was beyond caring and felt that she was pretty.
Even when she was giving auditions for films, she was told she needed to have a particular shape and size, and that she needed surgery..
' But mujhe toh main bahut sahi lagti hun(I find myself perfect) . Who are these people to tell me I’m not pretty?,'she said.
Reminiscing her days as a child and as a teenager, Radhika Madan said, 'as a kid, I was happy in my own world doing my own thing. I was a queen. I was really mischievous and would sometimes even puncture tyres for fun!
Growing up, I had a unibrow and hardly got attention from boys, but I didn’t care; I felt I was pretty.'
Radhika says that as a child, she dreamt of going to Broadway when she grew up.
'Whenever anyone asked, ‘What do you want to do when you grow up?’ I’d say, ‘Shaadi’! I loved the taamjham! But I became passionate about dancing and dreamt of going to Broadway. My parents were supportive,'she said.
Radhika made her entry in the world of television at an early age and met with instant success.
'At 17, I auditioned for a TV show and within three days I was in Bombay, shooting. But it was tough. I barely got time to sleep, which led to me gaining a few kilos.
Then, I heard rumours about me getting replaced and that pushed me to explore my limits. So I began working out and lost myself to my character. And I realised, this is my high…this is what I want to do!,'the actress said.
After charting out a successful career on the small screen, Radhika tried her luck in films but faced several rejections initially because of her 'imperfect ' shape and Suze.
However, Radhika says that she took all these setbacks on her chin. Her perseverance finally met with results and began getting roles in films.
'I got more TV offers, but I told myself, ‘You’re only 19, if you choose comfort, you’ll get stuck.’ So, I quit TV to do films. I began auditioning, but I faced rejections.
I was told I needed to have a particular shape and size, and that I needed surgery.
For the next 1.5 years I didn’t get work. It's easy to doubt yourself at such a Time, but I knew the journey is more important than the destination. So I made an effort to enjoy my auditions! Soon, I signed my first film as other projects followed., Radhika said.
Radhika says that her motto of life has been to love herself no matter what the situation. Thus attitude has contribute in large part to her success in the film industry.
'I remember I’d gained 12 kgs for a role to look older, and I auditioned for a 17-year-old character, both in a month! But I had only one motto–just have fun! That audition turned out to be one of my best and I got the part!
I think the key is to love yourself fiercely because what you see in yourself is what others see in you. If I’d been insecure, people would’ve fed on that fear. So whether it’s as a kid who didn't care about her unibrow or an adult who thinks her height is cute, I’ve always celebrated my imperfections. I know I don't have to fit someone else’s definition of perfection–I’m imperfectly perfect & I love it!”,'she said.
Radhika said that she is extremely excited about working in the Netflix anthology Feels like ishq, which streams on Netflix from today.
'I am excited about Feels like ishq and look forward eagerly to the audience response to the series.
The series is a throwback to the times when love was simple.,'she said.
