Aruna Irani,Bollywood’s most endearing character actress in 70s & 80s, turns 75

The 1973 film Bobby may have attracted attention for being the debut of Raj Kapoor's son Rishi Kapoor and the sensational debut of Dimple Kapadia but the film also caught attention of cinelovers for another reason.

Besides the chocolate lover boy Rishi and the sexy Dimple Kapadia, Bobby also grabbed eyeballs of film lovers and critics because of the endearing character of Nima played by Aruna Irani.

Aruna Irani's seductive dance moves in  the song 'Main Shayar To Nahin' and her endearing portrayal in Bobby got her lot of acclaim from film critics.

The actress  who played several endearing character roles in the 70s and 80s, turned 75 today.

Aruna Irani's fans greeted her as she turned  75.

Born in 1946, Aruna Irani, who began her acting career as a child artist in films like Ganga Jumna (1961) and Anpadh(1962) , played character and supporting roles in Caravan.(1971),  Garam Masala (1972) , Do Phool (1973),  Farz (1967),  Bobby (1973), Fakira (1976), Sargam (1979), Red Rose (1980), Love Story (1981), and Rocky (1981).

Not many are aware that Aruna Irani was one of the first leading ladies of megastar Amitabh Bachchan in Bombay To Goa (1972) , produced by comedian Mehmood Ali.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, Aruna  Irani switched to playing motherly roles  in films like Beta (1992)( for which she won her second Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award).

 She acted in the Kannada remake of the same film with the same role.

When her assignments in Hindi films dwindled in the early 80s, she turned to Gujarati films, producing and acting in many over the years. She has also acted in many Marathi films.

Some of her Marathi films are Aandhla Marto DolaBhingariChangu ManguLapwa ChapviEk Gadi Baki AnadiMitwaa and Bol Baby Bol.

In her later career, Irani also switched to television, performing character roles in various serials. She also took up direction and production of tele-serials such as Mehndi Tere Naam KiDes Mein Niklla Hoga ChandRabba Ishq Na HoveVaidehi and others.

On 19 February 2012, she was awarded the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' at the annual Filmfare awards function in Mumbai.

Her younger brother Indra Kumar us a well  known filmmaker,  who has produced films like Dil, Beta and Ishq.
