Bollywood continues to have average run at box office ; Chehre earns Rs 2.25 crore in opening weekend

Notwithstanding an easing of Covid restrictions across the country paving way for reopening of cinema halls in most parts of India barring Maharashtra,  Bollywood New Releases Bell Bottom and Chehre continue to attract poor to average footfalls at the theatres.

While the average run for the Espionage thriller Bell Bottom continued in its second week, the mystery drama Chehre,  which released this week saw poor footfalls at the cinema halls, earning just Rs 2.25 crore during its opening weekend.

The Akshay Kumar starrer Bell Bottom,  which released last week to tremendous buzz for its promos and trailer, saw a sharp drop in its collections during the second weekend compared to the opening weekend.

The film, which had earned Rs 18.75 crore in its opening week,  earned Rs 5.25 cr during its second weekend,  which included the holiday of Janmashtami.

The film has now earned around Rs 24 crore  in 12 days.

There has been an over 60 per cent drop in collections of Bell Bottom in its second weekend compared to the opening weekend.

Chehre,  the new release of the week,  recorded below average footfalls,  earning just Rs 2.25 crore in its opening weekend.

The film earned Rs 40 lakh on the Janmashtami holiday yesterday,  taking its earnings on the opening weekend to Rs 2.25 crore.

Trade sources said that the bulk of the collections of the film came from Delhi and NCR,  Gujarat and Punjab.

Chehre earns Rs 2.25 crore in opening weekend

Chehre, the second big starrer to release in cinemas after Bell Bottom earned Rs 45 lakh on its opening day on Friday.  There was just a slight jump in its earnings on Saturday to Rs 60 lakhs, taking the earnings of the films in two days to Rs 1.05 cr.

The average earnings for Bell Bottom and poor collections of Chehre are being attributed to the theatres across India operating at just 50 percent occupancy due to continuing threat of Covid-19 and the closure of cinema halls in Maharashtra, which forms a big market for Hindi films, amid the threat of the Delta variant of covid and the  third wave of COVID-19.

The lukewarm response to the two films is likely to result in filmmakers taking a cautious approach on release of their films in the coming months due to continued uncertainty on reopening of theatres in Maharashtra, which forms a big market for Hindi films.

With health experts forecasting onset of the third wave of COVID-19 in October,  the filmmakers are aking a cautious approach on release of new films.

Infact, many of the filmmakers are either going for direct release of the films on OTT of waiting for an opportune period for releasing their films in theatres.

While some films like Bhoot Police are releasing on OTT in September,  makers of films like Sooryavanshi,  83, Bunty Aur Babli 2, RRR  and KGF 2 are planning to release their films either in December or sometime next year.

The only Hindi film scheduled for release in cinemas in September is Thalaivi,  the multilingual film on life of late Tamil Naidu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The coming week will witness a release of Hollywood films Fast and the Furious 9 and Shang Chi.
