Chehre continues to record poor footfall at cinemas,  earns Rs 1.05 cr in two days

By Rajesh Ahuja

After below average collections on its opening day on Friday,  the Bollywood film Chehre continued to record poor footfalls at the cinema halls on its second day on Saturday.

After collections of Rs 45 lakh on Friday,  Chehre saw just a minimal rise in its collections on Saturday to Rs 60 lakh, taking its two day collections to Rs 1.05 crore.

Trade sources said that the bulk of the collections of the film came from Delhi and NCR and Punjab.

With the collections of Rs 60 lakh on Saturday,  the total earnings of Chehre in the first two days are Rs 1.05 crore.

Chehre,  despite exciting promos and trailer  and presence of megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi,  recorded poor collections on its opening day on Friday.

The film earned Rs 45 lakh from theatres across India on Friday.

Chehre is the second big starrer to release in cinemas after Bell Bottom and film  trade had hoped that the film,  along with Bell Bottom,  would help draw audiences back to the cinemas after a prolonged period of shutdown of theatres due to Covid.

Chehre continues average run at box office

Bell Bottom, despite a huge buzz generated by its promos and trailer,  had an average run at the box office in its opening week.

It earned Rs 13 cr in its opening weekend across India,  thanks largely to a jump in its collections last Sunday.  However,  the earnings of the film dropped on week days.

The average earnings of Bell Bottom and the poor response to Chehre on its opening day has been attributed by the trade experts to cinemas across India operating at just 50 per cent occupancy as also to the continued closure of cinema halls in Maharashtra amid the threat of the Delta variant of covid.

The lukewarm response to the two films is likely to result in filmmakers taking a cautious approach on release of their films in the coming months due to continued uncertainty on reopening of theatres in Maharashtra, which forms a big market for Hindi films.

With health experts forecasting onset of the third wave of COVID-19 in October,  the filmmakers are aking a cautious approach on release of new films.

Infact, many of the filmmakers are either going for direct release of the films on OTT of waiting for an opportune period for releasing their films in theatres.

While some films like Bhoot Police are releasing on OTT in September,  makers of films like Sooryavanshi,  83, Bunty Aur Babli2, RRR  and KGF 2 are planning to release their films either in December or sometime next year.

The only Hindi film scheduled for release in cinemas in September is Thalaivi,  the multilingual film on life of late Tamil Naidu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
