Reopening of theatres; PVR offers free ticket for every vaccinated moviegoer

By Rajesh Ahuja

With a dip in covid-19 cases in the country and consequently easing of restrictions paving way for reopening of cinema halls across India,  single screen cinemas as well as multiplex chains are offering incentives for vaccinated movie lovers visiting the theatres to watch a movie on the big screen.

Announcing its reopening across states and UTs in India from July 30, PVR Cinemas has introduced a special ‘JAB Offer’, to encourage people to get vaccinated while also incentivizing those who have already taken their vaccination. The offer will provide a vaccinated guest an additional ticket free (BOGO).  In addition to this, vaccinated moviegoers will also get a free popcorn on the purchase of another Popcorn tub during the first two weeks of its reopening.

The offer is available for movie patrons till August 12. The Ticket offer is available on BookMyShow apart from PVR Website, Mobile App and at the Cinemas.

In the 2nd Phase, PVR plans to give its 11 million PVR Privilege Customers the chance to earn 2X points for both Tickets and Food Spends, further extending the benefit to its loyal customers.

The offer is applicable on all movies and all cinemas where PVR has permissions to open except for the states of Telangana, AP and Pondicherry.

With the easing of restrictions in various states across the country,  various multiplex chains have announced reopening of cinema halls .

State governments in several areas of North India have allowed reopening of cinema halls with 50 per cent occupancy.

Many filmmakers are now eagerly  awaiting a decision by  Maharashtra government to reopen cinema halls.

There are some districts where the  state government is expected to allow cinemas to open .

Exhibitors are expecting cinemas in the State to reopen  in August.

Though the Maharashtra government is yet to allo reopening of cinema halls,  trade sources expect reopening of theatres in the State in the coming week.

Maharashtra is crucial to Hindi cinemas as around 30 per cent of the all India theatrical revenue for Hindi films in 2019 came from Maharashtra. The state has also suffered the most in India from the pandemic

Infact, in anticipation of the reopening of cinema halls,  makers of many films have announced release of their films in theatres in August.

Recently makers of Punjabi film Puaada,  which stars Ammy Virk and Sonam bajwa,  announced release of the film in theatres on August 12.

Makers of the big budget film Bell Bottom have also announced release of the film in cinema halls on August 19, leading to a lot of excitement in the film trade and among exhibitors  who see release of the Akshay Kumar Vaani Kapoor starrer as the ideal film to bring audiences back to the cinemas.

The coming weeks will also see release of the Hollywood film Mortal Combat in theatres.

The film, which released in theatres in the US in April, did a decent business on its release .
