Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani earns Rs 44.5 cr in opening weekend


The Karan Johar directorial performs well in Delhi NCR,  Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru

Riding on the hype surrounding it, the excellent direction by Karan Johar and performances by its star cast, including Alia Bhatt,  Ranveer Singh and veteran actors Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi,  the romantic drama Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani has earned Rs 44.5 cr in its opening weekend in India.

Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani,  which earned Rs 10.5 cr on its opening day,  saw a jump in its collections on Saturday and Sunday to Rs 15.5 cr and Rs 18.5 cr respectively,  taking its total earnings in the  opening weekend to Rs 44.5 cr.

The Alia Bhatt Ranveer Singh starrer did excellent business in Gurgaon, Delhi,  Kolkata,  Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Trade experts,  however, say that the box office performance of the film is somewhat below the expectations of the film trade considering that the film has been made on a big budget.

Trade analysts said that the film has not performed as per expectation in mass circuits like, Bihar , UP and Punjab.

They are hopeful that the love story will remain steady during the week days. 

The analysts feel that Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani needs to maintain steady collections during the week days to enable it to be a profitable venture.

Directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions in association with Viacom18 Studios,  Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani is the story about flamboyant Punjabi Rocky falling in love with intellectual Bengali journalist Rani despite  their  differences.

After facing opposition from their families,  Rocky and Rani decide to live with each other's families for three months before  getting married.

The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Jaya Bachchan , Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra in lead roles.

Releasing to a tremendous buzz,  Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which witnesses Karan Johar return to direction after a long hiatus, had a fair opening of Rs 10.5 cr on July 28, somewhat below the expectations of the film trade.

 It, however,  witnessed a sharp jump in its collections during Saturday and Sunday 

The film has evoked praise from critics and audiences for an excellent direction by Karan Johar and brilliant performances by Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Jaya Bachchan,  Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra.
