Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain- perfect blend of comedy,  romance & emotions; a stellar debut by Janmejaya

By Rajesh Ahuja

A Gym trainer Surya(Janmejaya Singh)becomes the subject of attention of his employer Maya(Rituparna Sengupta),  a business tycoon.  At the same time,  Surya falls in love with his next door neighbour Vaani(Anusmriti Sarkar). Caught between an older Maya and a younger Vaani, whom will Surya choose.  This dilemma seems to grip the protagonist of the new love triangle Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain,  which hit cinema screens this week .

At first sight,  Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain, which released on October 13, seems just another love triangle where a man is caught between the love of two women. However,  the film catches you by surprise with its perfect mix of comedy, romance and melodrama,  instantly reminding us of the films of the 80s.

It is this perfect blend of comedy, melodrama,  romance and emotions that sets Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain from the other contemporary love stories. Director Rajann Lyallppuri manages to impart a distinct 80s flavour to the film.

Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain has a perfect blend of comedy, romance and emotions; a stellar debut by Janmejaya Singh

This, coupled with the praiseworthy performances of the cast, including debutant Janmejaya Singh,  makes the film come across as a breath of fresh air.

Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain begins with the protagonist Surya (Janmejaya Singh) joining a gym as an instructor.  A coincidental meeting with the business tycoon Maya (Rituparna Sengupta), a regular at the gym, leads to her instantly falling in love with him. Maya is currently alone after her recent divorce with her politician husband Mayapati (Govind Namdev).

Maya appoints Surya as the manager of her company.  At the same time,  Vaani,  a college student living next door to Surya,  falls in love with him. She is so infatuated with Surya that she suggests that he end his relationship with Maya as she is not the right match for him.

Caught between two women- one older and the other younger- Surya is in a fix.

Directed by Rajann Lyallppuri,  Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain has all the ingredients of a typical Bollywood masala film- comedy,  melodrama and romance.  The proceedings will remind viewers of the Bollywood masala entertainers of the 1980s, which had the right doses of melodrama, comedy,  romance and emotions.

Another USP of the film is the performances of the cast.

Janmejaya Singh bowls you over with his stand out performance as a man caught between the love of two women. He comes across as endearing as Surya. His intense eyes brilliantly convey his emotions.  Also,  there is a subtleness in his acting.

Rituparna Sengupta looks alluring as Maya. She comes up with a competent act as the business woman.  Anusmriti Sarkar is impressive as Vaani.  She comes across as cute.

Rest of the cast,  including Govind Namdev,  Rajpal Yadav and Anup Jalota,  lend able support.

Other USPs of Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain are its production values and its music.

The film comes across as visually appealing.

Also, the songs of the film are melodious and hummable. The music,  composed by the late Bhappi Lahiri and his son Bappa Lahiri,  is a perfect tribute to the memory of the late singer.  The pick of the songs is 'Seva Seva', which has been sung by Rego B, the grandson of Bhappi Lahiri and youngest singer to make his debut on the Indian music scene.

In a nutshell,  Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain is a perfect blend of comedy, romance and emotions with a brilliant debut by Janmejaya Singh.  It reminds viewers of the Bollywood masala films of the 80s.
