Historicals, comedies, emotional dramas and political thrillers to entertain on OTT next week

As stay at home becomes the new normal amid the continuing threat of the Covid pandemic and digital platforms emerge as the new destination for entertainment lovers,  web series and films belonging to diverse genres are set to entertain viewers on various OTT platforms in the coming week.

Scheduled for premiere on various digital platforms next week are historical and emotional dramas, comedies and  political  thrillers.

Notable among the films and web series Scheduled for streaming on OTT platforms in the coming week are the emotional dramas Ek Duaa and Lines on Voot Select,  historical drama Chhatrasal on Mx player,  the comedy film Mimi on Disney Hotstar and season 2 of the political thriller City of Dreams.

Ek Dua on Voot Select

Scheduled to stream on Voot Select on July 26 is the emotional drama Ek Duaa , which features Bollywood actress Esha Deol Takhtani in the lead role.

Starring Esha Deol in the  lead , Ek Duaa will be streamed on Voot Select as part of 15 films to be shown on the platform as part of the Voot Select film festival.

Ek Duaa  is being produced by Esha Deol under her own production house Bharat Esha Films.

The film marks Esha Deol Takhtani's debut as film producer.

Ek Duaa marks the directorial debut of writer journalist turned filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee.

A story of hardships faced by a Muslim family, Ek Duaa will be screened as part of the Voot Select film festival which will witness the screening of short films like Vidya Balan’s Natkhat, Lihaaf, Khauff, A Short Hello and Bhaskar Calling.

Lines on Voot Select

Scheduled for premiere on Voot Select on July 29 in Lines, an emotional drama that shows how the long running conflict between India and Pakistan  demarcated two lovers  living on border between the two countries into nationals of two separate countries who are adversaries of each other.,

It is an innocent yet gritty story of a young girl Nazia representing the pains of people of Kashmir who have been the suffers of hatred between two countries.

Directed nu Hussein Khan and written by Rahat Kazmi, Lines is is yet another in the series of recent films lamenting the futility of the long running conflict between the two neighbouring countries.

Lines features Hina Khan in the lead role of Naziya, an Indian Muslim girl who falls in love with a Pakistani boy(Rishi Bhutani) .

The film features Rishi Bhutani, Farida Jalal,, Rahat Kazmi and Ahmer Haider in key roles.

Last year, Hina Khan had shared the first look of her film, which was released at the Cannes film festival.

Talking about her character Naziya. , Hina Khan says,'“Emotions don’t change because of the borders in between. The life and plight of Nazia is a simple portrayal of any girl who faces the magnitude of ordinary challenges in a not so ordinary story.'

Lines was to mark Hina Khan 's debut in films. However,  the release of the film was later postponed,  making Bollywood film Hacked as her debut.

Chhatrasal on Mx player

Also premiering on July 29 on Mx player is the historical drama Chhatrasal.

Rooted in 16th to 17th century,  Chhatrasal is based on the life of the unsung warrior King Chhatrasal of Bundelkhand.

This epic saga takes viewers back in time to relive the diabolical rule of Aurangzeb, who obsesses over ruling all of India and follows the life of a brave heart who stood up to his tyranny and challenged his rule. 

The historical drama will take viewers through King Chhatrasal's rebellion  against Aurangzeb’s tyrannical rule.

It will show how Chhatrasal  waged a war against the Mughal emperor to free his kingdom, Bundelkhand.

 Starring Jitin Gulati as Maharaja Chhatrasal and Ashutosh Rana as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, this historical drama is directed by Anadii Chaturvedi.

Chhatrasal also features Vaibhavi Shandilya, Manish Wadhwa, Anushka Luhar and Rudra Soni in pivotal roles.

Neena Gupta will play the role of the narrator for this period drama.

The show goes live on MX Player on July 29.

Mimi on Netflix 

With continuing uncertainty on reopening of theatres across India due to Covid-19 , increasing number of filmmakers are going for direct OTT release of their films.

Premiering on July 30 on Netflix is  Mimi,a hilarious comedy about a feisty and middle class girl's journey of becoming a surrogate mother.

Featuring Kriti Sanon in the lead role of the middle class girl who agrees to become a surrogate mother in return for a few bucks Mimi has created tremendous buzz with its promos and trailer.

A joint production by Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films, Mimi has been directed by Laxman Utekar, and written by Rohan Shankar. 

Mimi also features Pankaj Tripathi,  Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak in pivotal roles.

The trailer of the film released earlier this month, promises a story that is a heartening blend of comedy and compassion. .

The film was supposed to  release theatrically in mid-2020. 

 However, post-production delays due to COVID-19 pandemic caused several postponements in its release date. 

With the continuing uncertainty on reopening of theatres,  the makers have now decided to release the film on OTT.

Season 2 of City of Dreams  on Disney Hotstar

After a thrilling season 1, the political thriller City of Dreams is returning for a second season.

The much awaited season 2 of the show premieres on Disney Hotstar on July 30.

After an intriguing powerplay in season 1 of  City of Dreams, season 2 of the political thriller  promises another engrossing political drama.

Season 2 of the political thriller sees the feud within the Gaikwad family, the first political family of Maharashtra , intensify.

Into the second season of City of Dreams, the drama notches up as the feud increases within the Gaikwad family with Poornima Gaikwad and her father, Ameya Rao Gaikwad locking horns to claim their power.

The series features Atul Kulkarni as Amey Rao Gaikwad and Priya Bapat as Poornima Rao Gaikwad, daughter of Amey Rao Gaikwad, who considers herself as his  worthy successor .

Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Kukunoor Movies, the second instalment boasts off a gripping storyline and is headlined by a talented ensemble of actors including Atul Kulkarni and Priya Bapat,  who assay the onscreen father daughter duo of Amey Rao Gaikwad and Poornima Gaikwad.

The series, directed by ace filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, also features Eijaz Khan, Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sushant Singh.
