The average run of Indian films at the box office continues amid the threat of the third wave of COVID-19!

After an average run for Bell Bottom and Chehre,  the multilingual film Thalaivii too has opened to a lukewarm response.

A biopic on life of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa,  Thalaivi had an average run at the box office, earning Rs 4.75 cr during its opening weekend.

Thalaivii earns Rs 4.75 cr in its opening weekend

The film,  which features Kangana Ranaut in the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and Arvind Swami in the role of MGR,  earned Rs 1.35 cr in its opening day on Friday.  There was not much rise in the collections of the film on Saturday and Sunday.

While the film earned Rs 1.60 cr on Saturday,  it collected Rs 1.80 crore on Sunday.

A major part of the collections of the film came from Tamil Nadu,  where the film earned Rs 2.75 crore in its opening weekend of which Rs 1 cr came from Chennai alone. The Hindi version of the film had poor collections,  earning Rs 1 cr during its opening weekend.

Rs 50 lakh each came from Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh.

Thalaivii's poor collections in the Hindi Belt has been attributed to the two week window fixed by its makers before its release on OTT.

Produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh and directed by Vijay,  Thalaivi stars Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut in the role of Jayalalithaa.

Thalaivi also stars South Indian actor Arvind Swami in the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.

A multilingual film, which has been made in Hindi as well as Tamil and Telugu,
Thalaivi will take viewers through the journey of Jayalalitha from a Tamil superstar to one of the most powerful Iron Lady in politics.

The  film was earlier scheduled to release in April but was pushed due to the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Thalaivi is the third big release, after Akshay Kumar starrer Bell Bottom  and the Amitabh Bachchan Emraan Hashmi starrer  Chehre , to  release in theatres post the reopening of cinema halls after a prolonged closure due to the second wave of COVID-19.

Earlier,  Bell Bottom and Chehre too had an average run at the box office.  While Bell Bottom has earned approximately Rs 29 cr in its three weeks,  Chehre earned just Rs 2.75 cr in its opening week.
