Bell Bottom continues on average run at box office, fails to record much growth on Saturday
By Rajesh Ahuja
It may have generated a lot of buzz among cinelovers ahead of its release but the Akshay Kumar Vaani Kapoor starrer Bell Bottom continues to have an average run at the box office.
Bell Bottom, the first big starrer to release in theatres post pandemic and Touted as a film that would draw audiences back to the cinemas after a prolonged period of shutdown of theatres due to Covid, failed to witness a significant jump in its collections on the weekend.
Bell Bottom, which earned an average figure of Rs 5.50 cr in terms of theatrical revenues in first two days of its release, earned an average figure of Rs 3 crore from theatres across India on its third day, a slight increase over the box office earnings on the second day.
Trade sources said that the increase in earnings on Saturday came from Delhi, Punjab, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, at the same time, many of the areas where Bell Bottom is being screened saw a drop in collections on the third day.
The film has now earned a total of Rs 8.5 cr in its first three days.
Bell Bottom earns Rs 8.5 crore in first three days |
The lack of any substantial jump in the earnings of the film on Saturday is disappointing for exhibitors and cinema hall owners who were hoping for the collections of the film to record a significant jump on the weekend.
The collections of Rs 8.5 crore for the film in the first three days is far below the expectations of the film trade, which had been hoping for earnings of around Rs 25 to 30 crore for the film in its opening weekend, given the huge buzz generated by its promos and trailer.
Trade experts attribute the average box office numbers of the film to the closure of cinema halls in Maharashtra, a region which contributes a big chunk to the theatrical revenue for a Hindi film.
The less than expected box office earnings are also being attributed to the fact that theatres across India are currently operating at just 50 per cent occupancy due to the continuing threat of Covid-19 and the looming threat of the third wave.
Trade Analysts also say that since cinema halls in many states are recording low occupancy in late evening and night shows due to threat of Covid-19, this has invariably impacted the collections for the film.
A major chunk of the earnings of the film has come from Delhi and NCR and chest in Punjab.
Bell Bottom being the first big starrer to release in theatres after a gap of nearly 17 months, exhibitors and cinema hall owners are hoping that the film will boost the process of Revival of the film business by drawing audiences to the theatres.
Promos and trailer of Bell Bottom have generated tremendous buzz among cinelovers ahead of its release.
Bell Bottom released on 800 to 900 screens across the country, including 125 screens in Delhi and NCR.
With the threat of a third wave of COVID-19 looming and the cases of the Delta variant of covid witnessing a rise in many states, exhibitors are having their fingers crossed over the box office performance of the film on Sunday and during the weekdays.
The coming weeks will also witness the release of another big starrer Chehre, a psychological thriller featuring superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi in the lead.
Chehre, whose scheduled release in March had to be postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19, is scheduled to hit theatres on August 27.
An unprecedented surge in covid cases in the country in March resulted in makers of mega starrers Haathi Mere Saathi, Bunty Aur Babli2, Chehre, Sooryavanshi and Satyamev Jayate 2 postponing release of these films till a later date.
The Covid situation adversely impacted the earnings of the films released in theatres during the period, including Roohi, Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina.
An Espionage thriller, Bell Bottom is about a officer from the secret service (code named Bell Bottom) orchestrate an operation to rescue several people held hostage by four terrorists on a flight.
One of the most awaited films this year, Bell Bottom has been directed by Ranjit M Tewari and produced by Pooja Entertainment and Emmay Entertainment.
Bell Bottom stars Akshay Kumar in the lead with Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta and Huma Qureshi in other prominent roles.
The film was earlier scheduled to release on July 27. However, due to uncertainty on reopening of theatres, Akshay Kumar announced that the film will release in cinemas on August 19.
The news of the film's theatrical release has cheered the industry as well the audiences.
