Ankahi Kahaniya;Abhishek,Rinku shine in anthology of insightful tales of love, loneliness in City of Dreams

By Rajesh Ahuja

Ek akela ek shehar main raat main aur dopahar main aabudana dhoondta hai aashiana dhoondta hai(a lone person in a big city looks for a companion and a place which he or she can call thir home) said a song by lyricist Gulzar in the film Gharonda in the 80s.

The song talked-about the sense of emptiness, longing and loneliness experienced by  individuals who migrate daily from their homes in the small towns and villages, away from their friends and families, to a big metropolitan city in search of livelihood.

While the city provides these  people lots of job opportunities at the same time it also engulfs them with an eerie sense of emptiness and desolation that comes from absence of any friend, confidante or a  loved one with whom one can share their joys and sorrows, their  accomplishments and their failures

It is this sense of desolation that that is sought to be highlighted by Ankahi kahaniya, the new anthology of stories on love and loneliness being streamed on Netflix.

An anthology of stories by acclaimed directors Ashwini Iyer Tewari,Saket Chaudhary and Abhishek Chaubey, Ankahi kahaniya explores the feelings of love, loss and longing  in the City of dreams Mumbai.

Ankahi Kahaniya explores feelings of love,  loss and longing in City of Dreams

The first story by Ashwini Iyer Tewari narrates a poignant tale of loneliness experienced by a small town boy Pradeep (Abhishek Banerjee) working in a fashion store in Mumbai .

Faces with an acute sense of loneliness in the city with no friend with whom he could share his feelings , Pradeep fall in love with a new mannequin brought in the store . Slowly, he begins to share his feelings with the mannequin.

Through the story of Pradeep,  Ashwini Iyer Tewari highlights the acute sense of loneliness and a state of longing experiencd by  hundereds of people from small towns who flock to the big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and kolkata in search of their livelihood. With no one to talk to and share their feelings with,  they resort to several outlets to express their feelings.

The central theme of the story is brought out by a line stated by the protagonist that in this city of Mumbai one can find a job for oneself but cannot find anyone with whom they can  share their feelings .

Abhishek Banerjee is brilliant as the small town boy whose  sense of loneliness leads him to share his thoughts with the mannequin. Director Ashwini Iyer Tewari weaves a poignant and  emotional tale that brings our a small town individual's feelings of emptiness in a big metropolitan city.

The second story by Abhishek Chaubey is about how a young girl (Rinku Rajguru) uses love in movies as an escape from her sense of loneliness. For the girl watching movies in a single screen theatre is a way to get away, albeit fleetingly from herdrab life and humdrum existence.

During her visits to the cinema hall, she meets Nandu(Delzad Hiwsle), an usher in the theatre. The two fall in love and together leave their homes in search for a better life.

An adaptation of a Kannada story by poet Jayant Kaikini (Madhyantara), the story transports us in the era of single screen theatres where watching movies was an outlet for many of us to escape, albeit fleetingly,  from our drab lives.

Abhishek Chaubey's story seamlessly transports us to the era of the 70s and 80s where cinema and films were the only source of entertainment for the poor and the middle class , who often viewed films as a means to get escapist pleasure.

After 200 Halla Bol, Rinku Rajguru again impresses as the Love lorn girl who looks movies as a ' sweet escape' from her boring middle class life and decides to leave her home with Nandu in search of a better tomorrow.

The third story by Saket Chaudhary talks about the complex path of love in high society where love often turns into betrayal.

It is a story about a man(kunal Kapoor) and a woman (Zoya Hussain) whose partners are cheating on them. The two meet and decide to get into the truth of the matter. While the story begins with the woman feeling insecure about confronting her husband, it ends with her reassessing her priorities about sticking to her partner in face of his infidelity.

. The story takes us through the complicated and winding paths taken by love among high society people in a metropolitan city.

Zoya Hussain is brilliant as a woman who starts off being unsure about her course of action but who, after meeting the partner of her husband's paramour, finally decides to reassess her priorities.

Kunal Kapoor, who impressed you with his act as Babur in The Empire, is however, not at his his best here. He , however, shows some sparks of brilliance. Nikhil Dwivedi and palomi Ghosh lend able support as their partners.

In short, Ankahi kahaniya is an anthology with insightful tales of love and loneliness in the city of Dreams Mumbai.
