Drashti Dhami grabs eyeballs in The Empire as Khanzada, the kingmaker

By Rajesh Ahuja

Historical references to the mighty Mughal Empire may be filled with the tales of  powerful emperors Babur,  Humayun and Akbar holding sway over the populace of India but the real power behind the throne was wielded by the women of the household who held a strong influence on the decisions taken by the rulers.

The latest web series The Empire,  being streamed on Disney hotstar,  talks about the journey of Babur from being a heir apparent of the Timurimd land of Samarkand to becoming the emperor of Hindustan where he laid foundation of the Mughal empire

Playing an important part in Babur's tumultuous journey to become emperor of Hindustan were his grandmother Shah Begum (Shabana Azmi) and his sister Khanzada (Drashti Dhami)  to whom the emperor constantly turned for advice on matters concerning the Empire

While the focus in the web series may be on Kunal Kapoor as Mughal emperor Babur ,  Shabana Azmi and Drashti Dhami have also caught attention for their portrayal of Shah Begum and Khanzada.

Drashti Dhami has especially grabbed eyeballs from audiences and evoked praise from critics for her spirited act as Khanzada who acts like a pillar of strength for Babur all though his journey.

While Kunal Kapoor has bowled over the audiences with his performance as Babur, Drashti Dhami has been  real scene stealer in The Empire with her spirited act as Khanzada who, after the death of Shah Begum,  acts as the advisor and conscience keeper of Babur,  who often turns to her for advice.

She also impresses as the strong willed Khanzada who remains strong amid the frequent attempts by Sheybani Khan to break her and overpower her.

Drashti Dhami has especially come in for praise for coming across as graceful and dignified as khanzada.

The actress,  who has in the past worked in many television shows as an endearing girl next door , says that the role in The Empire is quite different from what she has done till now.

'My role in The Empire is quite different from what I have done till now,'she says.

Playing the role of the Mughal princess involved lot of hard work for Drashti Dhami,  including working on her diction and learning horse riding .

All the hard work that went into playing the role,  however,  seems to have paid off for Drashti Dhami who has been receiving huge accolades for her performance.

Drashti Dhami considers The Empire a huge milestone in her career.
