Ranjish Hi Sahi;Amla Paul, Tahir Raj Bhasin make a mark in this emotional tale about love, loss & longing
By Rajesh Ahuja
Shankar (Tahir Raj Bhasin), director of 3 flop films, is waiting for his first hit to help him gain a foothold in the film industry and enable him to ensure a respectable and comfortable life for his family. Shankar dreams of casting the prized actress Amna Parvez (Amla Paul) in his film. As luck would have it, he gets a chance to meet Amna Parvez and is able to narrate his story to her. However, little does he know that what began as a professional meeting would lead to a long lasting relationship which will bring turmoil in his and his family life.
The new web series Ranjish Hi Sahi, streaming on Voot Select, attempts another retelling of the tumultuous love story of Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi, which has formed the subject of many films in the past like Arth, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee and Woh Lamhe.
Created by Mahesh Bhatt himself and written and directed by Pushpdeep Bhardwaj, Ranjish Hi Sahi takes us through the story of Shankar, who is trying to establish a foothold in the industry as a director.
Currently Shankar finds himself at a crossroads of his life, with his last three films having turned out to be flops and now he finds himself struggling for survival. Looking for his first hit film, he approaches top actress Amna Parvez for his next film. He, however, soon finds himself drawn deeper into an extra marital affair with Amna, who is passing through an emotional tumoil in her life due to a failed relationship with an actor Zubair and the uncaring attitude of her mother.
Ranjish Hi Sahi takes us through the journey of Shankar as he finds himself caught between his love for Amna Parvez and his first love Anju, taking him through an emotional roller coaster ride.
The story ,narrated from the point of view of Shankar, takes us through the emotional journey of Shankar, from his turbulent childhood to his painful experience at a Godman's ashram to his initial failure as a director. The director taking us through Shankar’s failed experiment of visit to a Godman's Ashram is an apparent reference to Mahesh Bhatt's brief tryst with Osho in the 70s.
Narrating the Mahesh Bhatt Parveen Babi love story through an 8 episode series allows the makers ample time to take the audience through the chapters of that hase in detail.
The screenplay of the series is engrossing and keeps you glued . Emotions expressed in the show deeply touch the heart. The scenes between Shankar and his wife Anju as well as those between him and Amna Parvez are impacful and leave you emotional.
While narrating the story of Shankar, the director also gives us a peek into the workings of the film industry in the 70s and the 80s. The director manages to bring across the ambience and the feel of 70s Bombay throw the series.
Tahir Raj Bhasin breathes life and soul into the character of Shankar, giving audience peep into his strengths and vulnerabilities. His is a perfect casting as Shankar.
Lending him able support is Amrita Puri as Shankar's wife Anju. She leaves an impact as Anju who stands with Shankar at every step during his struggling phase and through his turbulent relationship with Amna Parvez
The surprise of the series is, however, Amla Paul as Amna Parvez. As a schizophrenic woman who is constantly plagued with insecurities due to her failed relationship with actor Zubair, competition from actress Zarina and uncaring attitude of her mother, she leaves you amazed with her performance. She perfectly mirrors the insecurities and vulnerabilities of Amna Parvez, who, despite being a top actress, is looking for an anchor in his life.
Zarina Wahab leaves a strong impact as Shankar’s mother who brings up her children Shankar and Ganesh through the barbs and taunts coming her way due to her illegitimate relationship.
The rest of the cast including Paras Priyadarshan, Rajat Kaul and Arun Bali lend able support.
In a nutshell , Ranjish Hi Sahi is an emotional tale about love, loss and longing which boasts of good performances from Tahir Raj Bhasin and Amla Paul.
My Rating;3.5/5
