Jersey; Shahid,Pankaj Kapur shine in emotional & inspirational drama about triumph of human spirit

Stories of fading sporting heroes making a comeback to the sport long after they quit it seems to have become the flavour of Bollywood in the last decade.

Last decade has seen films like Sultaan, Panga,. Toofan and Kaun Pravin Tambe narrate Stories about the late bloomers in the sporting arena who made a comeback to the sport in the late 30s or early 40s with their sheer grit and determination

Latest in line of such films is Jersey that tells story of Arjun Raichand, a former  cricketer making a comeback to Cricket ten years after he quit the sport  due to rampant politics in it.




A remake of the Telugu film of the same title, Jersey is the inspirational story of Arjun as her powers his way to win back a place in men in Blue in his late 30s through his sheer resolve and determination.

Arjun Raichand (Shahid Kapoor), a rising star on the Indian cricketing scene,   quit the sport at 26 fed up with the politics in the sport. Subsequent years see Arjun Raichand lead a life of frustration. One day, his son asks him for a jersey of the Indian cricket team. After his wife (Mrunal Thakur) refuses to give him Rs 300 to buy the Jersey,  Arjun decides to revive his career at the age of 36 for his sons dream and prove his ability. The film is about Arjun's journey as he goes about  asking a comeback to the men in blue.

Though primarily a film about a former cricketer making a comeback to the sport after a long gap, Jersey, on a larger level, is a film about the triumph of human spirit

Journey of Arjun Raichand from a state of oblivion to winning the coveted place in the men in Blue seeks to send across a message that the power of one's grit, resolve and determination can help one achieve an even seemingly impossible task .

The story of Arjun Raichand hold a high inspirational value for people in every walk of life who work against of odds to achieve success in their respective disciplines.

A large credit for this goes to director Gowtam Tinnannuri who weaves a powerful narrative through the film. It goes to the credit of the director,  who helmdd the original South Indian film,  that he manages to successfully transport the film from the South Indian military to the Punjabi heartland. Infact, the songs and dialogues of the film lend it a distinct Punjabi flavour.






Aiding the narrative are the high class performances in the film,  especially by Shahid Kapoor and Pankaj Kapur. Shahid Kapoor bowls you over with his emotionally charged performance as Arjun Raichand who is determined to make a comeback to the Indian cricket team to prove himself in the eyes of his son. It is an award worthy performance from the actor. Mrunal Thakur is effective as Arjun Raichand's wife. She brilliantly portrays ghe frustrations of a wife who has seen her husband's fall from the pinnacle of the sport to a state of oblivion.
Pankaj Kapur is brilliant as Arjun Raichand's coach, who aids his journey of making a comeback to the sport. Pankaj is definitely one of the highlights of the film.  Watching him on screen is like watching a master class in acting.
Ronit kamra comes across as natural as arjun Raichura's son, who is the reason for him to make a comeback.

The film boasts of excellent cinematography with the visuals coming across as eye filling. Music of the film is good with the song mehram being a highlight.

In short, Jersey is is n emotional and  inspirational drama about the triumph of human spirit.  It boasts of brilliant performances and skillful direction and engrossing  screenplay by Gowtam Tinnannuri.
