Saira Banu goes down memory lane on 63 years of K Asif's classic

Among the few films that have over the years become etched in the  history of Indian cinema is Mughal e Azam, the glorious classic that has stood the test of time with its sheer magnificence and the meticulous attention to detail that perfectly captured the opulence of the Mughal Era.

As K Asif's magnum opus completes 63 years, yesteryears actress Saira Banu went down memory  lane to revisit the timeless classic.

On completion of 63 years of Mughal e Azam, Saira Banu described it as 'a timeless testament to the splendor of Indian filmmaking '.

While reminiscing about Mughal e Azam,  Saira Banu was effusive in her praise for her late husband and legendary actor Dilip Kumar's performance in the film.

In a social media post, Saira Banu termed Dilip Kumar's performance as a centre point of Mughal e Azam, that added an 'extra layer of brilliance to the film'.

'In the history of Indian cinema, no movie has left as profound a mark on the hearts of the audiences as 'Mughal e Azam'. This magnum opus,  directed by the visionary K Asif, stands as a timeless testament to the splendor of Indian filmmaking, 'Saira Banu said.

'Mughal e Azam transcends the boundaries of time, effortlessly transporting audiences to the opulent Era of the Mughal dynasty. The film's journey to completion was no less than an epic saga itself, spanning an astonishing ten years.

The attention to detail in every aspect of the movie, from the breathtakingly majestic 'Sheesh Mahal' set to timeless music melodies such as 'Thumri' Mohe Panghat Pe and the Qawaali 'Teri Mehfil Main', created by Naushad,to the intricately and aesthetically captivating costumes,  showcased nothing less than brilliance, 'the actress said.

'The movie will remain a beacon of cinematic brilliance, reminding us of artistic heights that Indian cinema can attain. It continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors, serving as a reminder that true artistry knows no bounds and stands the test of time, 'she added.

Talking about the performance of the late Dilip Kumar in the film,  Saira Banu said, 'at the core of Mughal e Azam lies the captivating performance of sahib, whose portrayal added an extra layer of brilliance to the film.

Sahib's portrayal of Prince Salim was nothing short of mesmerizing. His ability to infuse life into the character,  whether in  moments of tender romance or fierce rebellion, was a sight to behold. His powerful performances created a symphony of emotions that echo in the hearts of the audiences till date. '

Produced and directed by K Asif,  the epic historical drama,  released in 1960, follows the love affair between Mughal Prince Salim (who later became Emperor Jahangir) and a court dancer Anarkali. Salim's father,  Emperor Akbar, disapproves of Salim 's relationship with Anarkali, leading to a war between the father and son.

Mughal e Azam starred Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar,  Madhubala and Durga Khote in the lead roles.

Mughal e Azam set several box office records in India. It became the highest grossing Indian film.

The film bagged several awards, including one National Film award and three Filmfare awards at the 8th Filmfare awards.

The film earned accolades from audiences and critics for its grandeur and meticulous attention to detail and performances of its cast.

Mughal e Azam was the first black and white film to be digitally colored. The colored version,  released on November 12, 2004, was also a commercial success.
