When 300 common women from Bhuj created history during 1971 war against Pakistan
By Rajesh Ahuja
To an onlooker, they may come across as 300 common women leading common lives.
However, one fateful day in 1971, during India's war against Pakistan, saw these ordinary women stepping up to protect the pride of the Nation.
300 ordinary women in Bhuj created history during the Indo pak war in 1971 when they joined efforts by an IAF squadron leader to rebuild the runway of the Bhuj airbase to script a historic victory of India against Pakistan.
Narrating the tale of bravery and sacrifice of these women is the film Bhuj The Pride of India, which premieres on Disney Hotstar tomorrow.
Bhuj The Pride of India, is a story of a brave IAF officer Vijay Karnik (Ajay Devgn) who reconstructed the Bhuj airbase with the help of 300 local women after the Pakistani Air Force had destroyed the base during the 1971 war .
During the 1971 Indo‑Pak war, the IAF airstrip and the airbase at Bhuj were destroyed by the Pakistani Air Force. Subsequently, 300 local women led by IAF squadron leader Vijay Karnik heroically toiled day in and day out to reconstruct the airbase. This act of resilience was a pivotal moment which not only boosted the morale of the country, but also helped us win the war.

Ahead of the premiere of the film on Disney Hotstar, many of these women who played an important role in India's victory in the 1971 war, reminisced about that fateful day.
One day, these 300 women were common people with common lives. However, everything changed when they stepped up for the Nation.
Their names may not figure in history books but these women feel a sense of pride even today for having contributed to the service of the Nation on that fateful day.
Reminiscing about the day, Sundarben Jetha, the woman who led the group of 300 women , says ,'one one call by IAF Squadron leader Vijay Karnik, we all left our homes to do something for the service of the Nation .without worrying about our families.
At that time we felt that our first duty was for the Nation. We were confident that God would take care of our family in our absence .'
Recalling that day, another woman from the group said that they are happy that the name of Bhuj has become etched in history books.
'We are Happy that the name of our area has been etched in history books,'she said.
Directed by Abhishek Dudhaiya, Bhuj The Pride of India features Ajay Devgn as IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, alongside Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk and debutante Pranitha Subhash and Ihana Dhillon.
