Rashmi Rocket; Tapsee panna,Abhishek Banerjee shine in gritty tale of woman athlete's triumph against odds

By Rajesh Ahuja

In one of the scenes of the sports biopic Rashmi Rocket, streaming on zee5, the lawyer of Rashmi, who is fighting against the gender discrimination of the athletic association, tells her that they could lose the case. To this, Rashmi says that 'haar jeet parinaam hai koshish hamara kaam hai' (losing or winning is an outcome,  to give it our best shot is our duty).

It is a statement that symbolises the spirit of Rashmi Rocket, which comes across as a gritty tale of athlete Rashmi's triumph against odds as she fights the menace of gender testing in sports.

Rashmi Rocket is a gritty tale about a woman athlete's triumph against odds

Small town girl Rashmi(Tapsee Pannu) , who is known as Rocket in her home town of Bhuj for her breakneck speed, aspires to become a medal winning athlete for the country.

After encouragement and support from her family members and her boyfriend (priyanshu Painyuli),,she takes part in national sporting events and soon establies a niche for herself in the national sporting arena.

The next step is winning medals in international sporting events. She seems to be well on her way to becoming an international athlete when her life takes a grim turn after a gender verification test carried out by the sports authorities leads to her being banned from the sport, leaving her life shattered.

Accused of fraud and being disparaged by the sports association and her fans, Rashmi decides to fight back and files a human rights violation case against the sports association , challenging the laws of the nation in her fight for justice.

On the face of it, Rashmi Rocket is the journey of Rashmi from a small town to winning medals for the country.  However,  at the heart of it, Rashmi Rocket is about her fight against Gender testing in sports,  which  is seen as discriminatory towards women sports persons.

The first half of the film takes viewers through the journey of Rashmi from her small town in Bhuj to becoming a medal winning athlete for India.

While taking viewers through the journey of Rashmi,  the director Akarsh Khurana also touches on the phenomenon of nepotism in Indian sports wherein high ranking officials in the sports associations are willing to go to any lengths to ensure an unhindered climb of their kin on the ladder of success.
Also,  through the turbulent experience of Rashmi as she is forced to undergo gender testing,  the director attempts to bring focus on the discriminatory practice.

The screenplay of the film is intriguing and keeps you hooked to the proceedings.  The scenes of the courtroom proceedings keep you on edge of your seat.

A USP of the film are its performances.

Tapsee Pannu puts in a spirited performance as Rashmi.  As the small town girl with a steely resolve whether it be  about her initial decision  not to participate in sporting events or as an athlete disparaged by the sports association who decides to fight against the discriminatory practice of Gender testing in sports , Tapsee impresses as a girl with a never say die spirit.

Supriya Pathak is quite effective as Rashmi's mother who is  constantly goading her to give a shot to the national and international sporting events and who acts as a constant source of support during her fight against the sports association.

Priyanshu Painyuli lends able support as Rashmi's husband who is a constant source of encouragement to her during her legal battle with the authorities.

Manoj Joshi is impressive as Rashmi's father,  who sows the seeds of a steely resolve in her. He makes his presence felt in a brief rol.

The surprise package is,  however,  Abhishek Banerjee as Rashmi's lawyer who represents her in her legal battle against the association.  As the person who is instrumental in convincing Rashmi to fight the case against the association for subjecting her to gender testing and who gives it his all in the legal fight against the authorities,  Abhishek Banerjee makes his presence felt in the film.  His is a performance to watch out for.

It reminds one of the performance of Pankaj Tripathi in the web series Criminal Justice Behind Closed Doors,  streamed on Disney Hotstar last year.

The rest of the cast of the film lends able support.

In a nutshell,  Rashmi Rocket is a gritty tale about a woman athlete's triumph against odds with notable performances from the main cast.

My rating; 3.5/5
