By Rajesh Ahuja

He has made a mark for himself the world over for his Punjabi pop singing and has helped make Indian pop music popular worldwide.

Not many are, however,  aware that Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi actually wanted to be a Ghazal singer. He decided to take to pop singing after not many in the film industry took him seriously as a Ghazal singer.

Daler Mehndi says he wanted to become a Ghazal singer

'I  recieved my training in Dadri and Thumri style of singing from the music legend Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.  I always wanted to be a Ghazal singer. However,  when I approached people in the film industry for getting an opportunity to sing Ghazals , nobody took seriously.  After looking at my skinny physical appearance,  they used to summarily dismiss me. Infact, many a time when I stood on stage with a harmonium,  I was shooed away, 'the Internationally renowned pop singer said during an appearance on the Kapil Sharma show on Sony entertainment television.

After being rejected as a Ghazal singer, Dale Mehndi decided to take up Punjabi pop singing.

'The moment I took up Punjabi pop singing,  there was a long line of producers at my door. Now when I look back I  thank my stars that I did not become a Ghazal singer as I would have got lost in the crowd,'Daler Mehndi said.

Daler Mehndi appeared on the Kapil Sharma show along with the cast of the web series Tabbar,  which is currently streaming on Sony Liv digital platform.

Talking about his days of struggle,  Daler Mehndi said that he started off doing shows for just Rs 150 a show. However,  as his popularity grew, he started getting lakhs per show.

In this context,  he revealed that once he was asked by late Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh to do a show for Rs 25000. However,  when Jagjit Singh asked him some years later to another show for a friend,  he was charging Rs 7 lakh per show.

A singer, songwriter, author and record producer, Daler Mehndi has helped to make Bhangra popular worldwide, as well as Indian pop music independent of Bollywood music. He is best known for his dance songs, voice, turban and long, flowing robes.

He has also sung sings for Bollywood films over the years,  including Mrityudata, Rang De Basanti, Singh is King and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
