Badhaai Do;thought provoking story of 2 people coming together in marriage of convenience to forge a bond of love & friendship

By Rajesh Ahuja

For long, small town India has been presented by Bollywood as a scene of gang wars, petty crimes and social discrimination against women and people belonging to the lower caste. The existential crisis experienced by a section of people in small town India on account of their gay or lesbian orientation  hardly formed the focus of Bollywood films in the past decades.

Things are, however,  changing jn Bollywood with the last few years witnessing several films like Shubh Mangal  Saavdhan, Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan , Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui  and Mimi centering around small town  individuals with inclination for persons of the same sex  , people undergoing sex change or about small town girls agreeing to be surrogate mothers for a quick buck.

Badhaai Do is a thought provoking story of two people coming together in a marriage of convenience to forge a bond of love and friendship

The latest in the line of such films is Badhaai Do,  which is about a man and a woman going in for a marriage of convenience to allow themselves freedom and space for following their inclination for people of the same sex.

Shardul Thakur(RajkummarRao) , a  police officer posted in Dehradhun police station designated for women , is pressurized by his family for marriage but he isn't keen as he has inclination for persons of the same sex. Sumi (Suman) , a woman working as a PT teacher in school in the same town too has pressure of marriage from her family but is not interested as has inclination for persons of the same sex.

Sumi meets Shardul at the police station when she goes to file a complaint against a person for blackmailing her. Shardul helps Sumi . In his meetings with Sumi , he reveals that he knows about her love for same sex and that he to loves men. Shardul convinces Sumi that they should marry each other for their family sake and live their individual life.Shardul and Sumi get married with get freedom to follow their  inclinations. However,  chaos ensues when Sumi's  girlfriend Rimjhim(Darao Garrang)  comes to stay with them. What follows is a hilarious turn of  events with forms the rest of the story.

A gay boy and a lesbian girl coming together in a marriage of convenience to live life on their own terms in the joint family set up in India and amid the traditional mindset characterizing small town India is an interesting premise for a comedy.

Director HarshVarrdhan Kulkarni weaves an emotional and thought provoking story of Shardul and Sumi as they traverse through their marital journey to forge strong bond of friendship and understanding.,sharing common concerns about finding their piece of happiness for themselves amid the traditional mindset of society .

What is commendable is that a controversial issue like same sex relationships has been dealt in a light and hilarious manner,  adding a fun element to the film.  It goes to the credit of director HarshVarrdhan Kulkarni and writers Suman Adhikari and Akshat Ghildyal that they come up with a thought provoking film that conveys a beautiful idea in a light hearted manner without indulging in melodrama or using stereotypes  The film effectively conveys the loneliness and a sense of isolation experienced by persons  having inclination for the same sex.

Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar are brilliant as Shardul and Sumi who enter into a marriage of convenience to allow themselves space and freedom to follow their inclinations. Rajkummar Rao comes across as cute with his forthright and matter of fact way in which he approaches Sumi for  marriage  Bhumi Pednekar shows evfortless ease in her portrayal of Sumi. She comes across as endearing.  She shows a sparkling chemistry with Rajkummar Rao.

Seema Pahwa is impressive as Shardul 's  chachi while Sheeba Chadha is appealing as Shardul's mother. Loveleen Mishra is is effective as Sumi's mother Chao Garang lends able support as Sumi's girlfriend Rimjhim.

In short, Badhaai Do is a thought provoking tale of two people coming together
coming together in a marriage of convenience forging a strong bond of love & friendship.
