Gangubhai Kathiawadi earns Rs 66.5 cr in opening week, 2nd highest opening week by female driven film

Continuing with its strong run at the box office,  Gangubhai Kathiawadi has earned Rs 66.5 cr in its opening week,  becoming the second highest earning female driven film in its opening week.

Gangubhai Kathiawadi,  starring Alia Bhatt in the title role,  earned around Rs 5 cr on Thursday,  taking its earnings in the opening week to Rs 66.5 cr.

The film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali,  has taken the second highest opening  for a female driven film , after the Kangana Ranaut starrer Tanu Weds Manu which had earnings of Rs 69 cr in its opening week.

The opening taken by Gangubhai Kathiawadi is commendable considering that the exhibition sector is just coming out of the pandemic phase with audiences still trying to shake off hesitancy levels set off  by spread of Covid over the last two years.

The film has done good business in Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh and has performed well in non metro cities.

With no major Hindi film release in cinemas this week barring Jhund, Gangubhai Kathiawadi is expected to consolidate its box office collection over the coming week before the release of Radhe Shyam next week.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay Leela Bhansali,  Gangubhai Kathiawadi is based on the life of Gangubhai,  a Madam in the red light area of Kamathipura.

The film stars Alia Bhatt in the title role with Shantanu Maheshwari,  Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles.

Gangubhai Kathiawadi features Ajay Devgn in an extended cameo.

The film has generated tremendous buzz in the run up to its release due to it being helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the presence of Alia Bhatt.

It earned Rs 37.5 cr in its opening weekend.
