By Rajesh Ahuja

To cinelovers and her legion of fans, she is a heartthrob who has the power of making  millions of hearts go afliutter with her million dollars Smile,  her charm and her grace.  However,  beneath the mask and veneer of fame and glamor, Anamika Anand is a lonely woman who is constantly looking for love and understanding from her family and wanting live her life to the fullest without the trappings of stardom.

Beneath Anamika Anand,  the star lies a woman  for whom her  happiness is all that matters,  regardless of the trappings of the life of stardom. The Fame Game,  the new web series on Netflix,  takes us through the story of a starlet beneath the mask of fame and glamour.

The Fame Game is a stark tale of dark reality of the film world beneath the mask of fame and glamour

Anamika Anand(Madhuri Dixit) , a global superstar, suddenly disappears from her house without a trace. As police, led by ACP Shobha Trivedi (Rajshri Deshpande), begin to probe her disappearance, and her loved ones- her daughter Amu(Muskkaan Jaferi), son Avi(Lakshvir Saran) and her fan Madhav(Gagan Arora) search for  answers to her disappearance,  they uncover some stark , hidden and somewhat painful truths beneath the seeminly perfect life of the iconic actress.

The Fame Game is an attempt to look into the dark side of the life of a celebrity beneath the cult of stardom. Through various flashbacks , the series  provides us a peep into the painful life of  Anamika Anand , far removed from her image of a charming and graceful star . She may be the heartthrob of millions in the world of showbiz but in the confines of her home Anamika Anand is an extremely lonely woman longing for love and understanding from people close to her , especially her husband Nikhil More(Sanjay Kapoor) and her mother (Suhasini Mulay). It is this need for love and understanding that makes Anamika gravitate towards her old flame and reigning superstar Manish Anand(Manav Kaul).

The story by Sri Rao seems to have taken leaf out of life of some Bollywood heartthrobs of the 50s and 60s who radiated charm and grace on the silver screen while leading lonely existence in their personal lives.

Director Bejoy Nambiar effectively brings out the dark reality of the life of a star beneath all the glitz and the glamor in the city of dreams Mumbai. Though the series is part fiction and part reality, it nevertheless presents the painful dark reality of the underbelly of the life of fame and stardom in the tinsel world.

The character of Anamika Anand in a way is reflective of the microcosm of morbid reality of the life of the stars who have made their place in the hearts of millions of people with their charming on screen persona.

Madhuri Dixit makes a brilliant digital debut as Anamika Anand. She is perfect as an actress,  who is past her prime and trying to recreate the old magic on the Silver screen and whose effortless charm and grace on the screen hides beneath it a life full of loneliness and unfulfilled love and desires. Emoting through her expressive eyes and her facial expressions, Madhuri Dixit effectively conveys a wide range of emotions almost effortlessly.

Sanjay Kapoor is impressive as Anamika Anand's gold digger husband for whom she is nothing more than a money making machine.  Manav Kaul is effective as Anamika's ex flame and reigning superstar Manish Khanna whose heart still beats for her.  Muskkaan Jaferi and Lakshvir Saran impress as Anamika's children who have an air of vulnerability about them. Both of them comes across as endearing making the audience feel for them.

Another notable performance in the series comes from Suhasini Mulay as Anamika's scheming mother for whom her daughter is her ladder to a rich lifestyle.

Rest of the cast of the series,  including Rajshri Deshpande as ACP Shobha Trivedi,  Gagan Arora as Anamika's ardent fan Madhav and Shubhangi Latkar as Anamika's maid , lend adequate support.

In short, The Fame Game is a stark tale of dark reality of  stardom beneath the mask of fame . Madhuri Dixit  impresses in her digital debut.
