Short Film Parchaaiyaan to screen at Cannes Film Festival

In a feather in the cap for filmmaker Chandrakant Singh, his latest short film Parchaaiyaan,  a tribute to the legendary film lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi,  will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.


Parchaaiyaan’ is presented by renowned Entrepreneur and Film Trade Analyst, Girish Wankhede who is also one of the Producers of this film. Parchaaiyaan stars Tanuj Virwani, Sezal Sharma and Hemant Kher in key roles.

The entire team of the film Parchaaiyaan is excited at the screening of the film at the Cannes Film Festival.

“ I'm thrilled that our short film 'Parchaaiyaan' is scheduled to be screened at Cannes this year. It’s a dream come true as we consider this festival as the world's most prestigious film festival, ‘said Director Chandrakant Singh.

While talking to Media, Actor Tanuj Virwani said, “I personally love the medium of short films and it's an honour for our film to be screened at a platform like Cannes Film Festival. We will be attending the Cannes film festival 2022. It will be a great feeling to be part of this".

Girish Wankhede, who is again in the limelight with this short film, says,’ I'm a huge fan of Sahir Sahab and being associated with something like this is a big high. Short Films space is dynamic and displaying this to the world in Cannes will set its course. We are quite ambitious and intend to travel the globe with this heartwarming film. Chandrakant Singh has done an incredible job by justifying this romantic tribute and I look forward to the reactions in Cannes”.

‘Parchaaiyaan’ is a tribute to the most celebrated lyricist, Sahir Ludhianvi who gave Indian cinema a new direction and whose story is an inspiration to younger generations.

Born on March 8, 1921 in Karimpura in Ludhiana in Punjab, into a Gujjar Muslim landlord family, Sahir Ludhianvi was part of the quartet of lyricists who ruled the Hindi cinema in the 50s and 60s - Shakeel Badayuni, Shai,endra and Majrooh Sultanpuri.

He was also the most controversial among the four lyricists because of his temperamental nature.Sahir insisted that the film score should be composed for his lyrics and not the other way around.

Sahir Ludhianvi, who made his debut with  Azadi Ki Raah Par (1949), earned acclaim as a film lyricist with  Naujawan (1951 ), which had music by S.D. Burman. Films like Baazi (1951) ,  Pyaasa (1957), Izzat", "Dastan" , Yash Chopra's "Daag" and Kabhie Kabhie earned him recognition in the film industry.

Burman in Taxi Driver (1954 ), Karna Hai To Aa sung by Mohammed Rafi, in Naya Daur (1957) under composition of O P Nayyar, Jane Kya tune kahi, sung by Geeta Dutt, Jane Woh Kaise, sung by Hemant Kumar and Yeh Duniyan Agar Mil  bhi jaaye to kya hai , sung by Mohammed Rafi in Pyaasa (1957) , Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega, sung by Mohammed Rafi in Dhool Ka Phool (1959) , Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai, sung by Mohammed Rafi and Manna De in Barsaat Ki Raat (1960) , Allah Tero Naam, sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Hum Dono (1961) , Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se Ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono, sung by Mahendra Kapoor in Gumrah (1963) ,Tora Mann Darpan Kehlaye sung by Asha Bhosle in  Kaajal (1965) , Main Pal do pal ka shayar hoon sung by Mukesh in Kabhi Kabhi (1976) , Aagey bhi jane na tu in Waqt (1965), "Na Tu Zameen Ke Liye Na Aasaman Ke Liye for "Dastan" 1972 , Main zindagi ka sath nibhata chala gaya in Hum Dono (1961) and Neele Gagan Ke Tale in Humraaz (1967) .

From 1950s till the 1980s, Sahir Ludhianvi worked with several composers including S D Burman,  Ravi, Roshan, Khayyam and Datta Naik. Sahir also worked with music director Laxmikant–Pyarelal in the films  "Man Ki Aankhe", "Izzat", "Dustan"  . Sahir also collaborated with Baldev Raj Chopra in several films like Saadhna (1958), Dhool Ka Phool (1959) and  insaaf ka Tarazu.

During his career as lyricist, Sahir Ludhianvi won two  Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist for Taj Mahal (1963) and for his work on Kabhie Kabhie (1976). He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971.

On 8 March 2013, the ninety-second anniversary of Sahir's birth, a commemorative stamp was issued in his honour.

Chandrakant Singh  has earlier directed Hindi films like ‘Rama Ram Kya Hai Drama’, ‘Bin Bulaye Baraati’, ‘Be Careful’, ‘Main Zaroor Aaunga’
