However,  not much is known about the close bond that the Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar shared with legendary star Ashok Kumar.

In a social media post,  the late actor's wife Saira Banu shared a story that bears testimony to the close bond that he shared with Ashok Kumar.

In a post on Instagram,  Saira Banu described the bond between Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar as 'a great camaraderie in bad times '.

What set the stage for a long lasting friendship between Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar was his visit to Bombay Talkies in quest of his search for a job.

'One morning,  Sahib(a term used by Saira Banu to address Dilip Kumar) ran into Dr Masani, his father's acquaintance, and told him that he was in search of a job.
Dr Masani suggested that he should go with him and took him along to meet Ms Devika Rani, the boss of Bombay Talkies Studio, Saira Banu posted.

'Devika Raniji, a picture of elegance m welcomed them and took them personally to the floor where a shooting was going on.
She led him to a man who was well dressed and looked distinguished. His dark hair was combed back and he smiled through the eyes of Sahib. He held his hand in a warm handshake that marked the beginning of a friendship that was to last a lifetime. He was Ashok Kumar, the superstar who soon became a 'bhaita' to Sahib,'Saira Banu said on Dilip Kumar's first introduction to Ashok Pathak.

'He(Ashok Kumar) said he knew why he (Dilip Kumar) was here. You are a handsome man and I can you you are eager to learn well. It's very simple.  You just do the scene given to you.as you would behave in a real life situation is you were really in it.

Be natural.  If you try to act it out it will look silly, 'Saira Banu recounted about Dilip Kumar's first interaction with Ashok Kumar.

Dilip Kumar's first meeting with Ashok Kumar set the stage for several regular meetings between the two.

'Ashok Bhaiya lived close to the Studios those days and Raj(Kapoor) and Dilip Sahib were always welcome to Bhaiya's home to Savour hot bhajiyas made by his wife shoba bhabhi  Raj Kapoor would often join Sahib and hug him excitedly saying that he's happy to know that he(Dilip Kumar) has joined the acting profession.

Bhaiya sometimes arrived while they were having bhajiyas and demanded that they play badminton with him. He would chide them jokingly,  You come here and flirt with my wife, eat nice bhajiyas and you don't want to accompany me in playing badminton. Later when they worked together,  on Ashok Bhaiya's order, there would be a 'daawat' at lunchtime with delicious food like  biryani and homemade ice cream, 'Saira Banu recounted.

Many years later, when Ashok Kumar was unwell , Dilip Kumar would often visit him at his Chembur home.

'Many years later, when Bhaiya was at home out of health problems,  Sahib used to frequently visit him at his Chembur house where he would be resting in bed very much his ebullient self but naturally weaker, and Sahib used to regale him with Urdu couplets and wicked jokes

He would respond marvelously and cheer up. Sahin and I visited him regularly and Bhaiya's man Khurshid followed us out and to,d us that 'Dada moni' really perks up and lives up with your coming. This was a great camaraderie in bad times, 'Saira said.

Among the many films in which Dilip Kumar shared screen space with Ashok Kumar was the 1951 film Deedar, which starred Dilip Kumar,  Nargis and Ashok Kumar.
