Digital platform Netflix on Wednesday released first look posters of the period drama Heeramandi:The Diamond Bazaar, a series about the lives of courtesans at the red light district of Heeramandi in Lahore in British India.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali,  Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,  which marks Bhansali's debut on the digital screen , is about the lives of tawaifs  at the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, during the British Raj.

The much awaited period drama, which is scheduled to premiere on Netflix soon, stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal in pivotal roles.

 Mitakshara Kumar co-directs this drama series along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Set against the Indian independence movement against the British Raj in the 1940s, Heeramandi is about the lives of courtesans living at the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore

The pilot episode of the eight part series has been directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali while the rest of the episodes have been directed by Mitakshara Kumar.

Heeramandi tells the story of Mallikajaan and Fareedan,  who are locked in a battle for succession of Heeramandi,  where courtesans reign as queens.  The only hope is young Alam, the youngest daughter of Mallikajaan. However,  in a twist of fate,  Alam relinquishes power to choose the love of one man over the adulation of many.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has termed Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar as his 'biggest project'.

The period drama has grabbed attention of audiences ahead of its release.
