Comedies, horror flicks,historicals & youth dramas to entertain on OTT this week

After crime drama Cartel and socio political thriller 200 Halla Ho last week,  this week will see a series of historical sagas, college youth dramas, horror flicks and comedies entertain audiences on OTT.

The week will see historical dramas The Empire and Sabka Sai,  college youth drama Engineering Girl and horror film Bhoomika stream on various OTT platforms.

Also scheduled to premiere this week is comedy show Amazon Funnies; Stand Up Shorts.

Bhoomika on Netflix

Streaming on Netflix from today is Tamil horror film Bhoomika,  that takes viewers through a fictional scenario of nature punishing humans for every action that hurts the environment.

Written and directed by Rathindran R Prasad, Bhoomika is the story of a series of eerie events at a lush, abandoned property which is sought to be redeveloped by a corporate group.  Even as the Paranormal activity at the abandoned property raises an alarm , it turns out that the eerie events at the property are an instance of Nature punishing humans for hurting the environment.

Boomika is  the first feature film of Rathindran to release for a wider audience. His previous film Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kathai is yet to see the light of day.

Rathindaran had previously directed a segment called Inmai in Netflix’s anthology drama, Navarasa.

Bhoomika features Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead role.  It also stars Vidhu, Pavel Navageethan, Madhuri, Surya Ganapathy, Ayaan Abhishek and Avantika Vandanapu.

Aishwarya Rajesh was last seen in Thittam Irandu, which premiered  on SonyLIV last month.

Stand Up Shorts on Amazon Prime Video

Audiences will be treated to a liberal dose of stand up comedy this week  with Amazon Funnies; Stand Up Shorts,  a special series on Amazon Prime Video in which stand-up comedians Shreeja Chaturvedi, Shankar Chugani, Ramya Ramapriya and Aadar Malik will make the audience laugh out loud with their new stand-up comic acts .

The comedy series, to be streamed on Amazon Prime Video from August 26, will feature fifteen-minute stand-up sets from the four artists.



Amazon Funnies; Stand Up Shorts will kickstart with a stand up comedy act by Shreeja Chaturvedi , followed by a comic act by Shankar Chugani.  This will be followed by a comedy act by Ramya Ramapriya  The show will culminate with a stand up comedy act by Aadar Malik.

On being a part of this show,  Comedian and writer Shreeja Chaturvedi said, “This lockdown has taken a lot out of us and I am super stoked to be able to bring some comedy and joy back in the lives of the many people tuning in.”

On her stand-up comedy act,  Ramya Ramapriya said, “The show is like a box of balloons, you never know what you’re gonna get and it tastes funny. In my set, titled FUN, I share with you my idea of fun, and I hope watching it is your idea of fun.”

Comedian Aadar Malik said that his act in the comedy show was dedicated to his grandmother.

"I love doing what I do and this set is particularly special to me as it is dedicated to my grandmother, who will always be one of the most special women in my life. I'm sure the audience will find the act very relatable and respond to it with roars of laughter. Comedy is one of the most loved genres on Amazon Prime Video and I am glad to have this opportunity to entertain and amuse the audience," he said.

The Empire on Disney Hotstar

One of the most interesting offerings on OTT this week will be period drama The Empire, a show  that chronicles the journey of Mughal king Babar as he goes about his endeaour to consolidate the Mughal empire in India.

Scheduled to  premiere on Disney Hotstar on August 27, The Empire features Kunal Kapoor in the lead with Shabana Azmi,  Drishti Dhami and Dino Morea in key roles, The Empire promises to be  one of the grandest period drama on the digital screen.

Directed by Mitakshara Kumar, The Empire, based on Alex Rutherford's Empire of the Moghuls: Raiders from the North, traces the origins of the Mughal Dynasty with Kunal Kapoor featuring as Mughal emperor Babar, who laid the foundation of the dynasty.

The epic period-action drama, created by filmmaker-producer Nikkhil Advani,  follows the story of a warrior, adventurer, survivor, and a king.

The period-action drama follows the journey of Mughal king Babar as he goes about his endeaour to consolidate the Mughal empire in India.

The trailer and promos of the period drama have generated tremendous buzz among viewers  by promising them a grand visual spectacle showcasing the grandeur of the Mughal period.

The trailer of the period drama,  released by Disney Hotstar earlier this month, treats viewers to a visual spectacle with battle sequences mounted on a grand scale.  The  trailer takes viewers through the journey of  the Mughal King (Kunal Kapoor)as he fights his family, dummies and fate to establish his kingdom.

Sabka Sai on Mx player

Another historical drama that streams on OTT this week is Sabka Sai,  which gives audiences a peek into the life of Sai Baba , including his views on spreading hate in the name of religion and his support for India’s freedom fighters.

Streaming on Mx player from August 26, Sabka Sai will take viewers through the journey of Sai Baba from an adopted infant.

It will also take viewers through his teenage identity struggles and the story his  establishing himself as the ‘Saint from Shirdi’.

Starring Raj Arjun in the titular role, Sabka Sai is directed by Ajit Bhairavkar.

The series also stars Gulki Joshi, Mohammad Samad, Aakash Sinha, Manoj Kolhatkar, Rohit Phalke, Asheesh Kapur, Devika Daftardar amongst others in pivotal roles.  

Talking about the  series, Bhairavkar says, “In this series, we have tried to portray Sai Baba as more human as compared to the God he is now worshipped as, along with the real life challenges he faced.”

In the series,  the audience will also get to know about Sai Baba's liberal belief in widow remarriage and acceptance of inter-religious marriages. 

Narrated through the lives of vivid characters and their own struggles, ‘Sabka Sai’  projects the core spiritual philosophy of Sai which is anchored in ‘Faith and Patience’ (Shraddha aur Saburi) and intends to bring the collective consciousness of humanity to believe that ‘All paths lead to one truth’ popularized by the phrase given by Sai – ‘Sabka Maalik Ek’.

Sabka Sai will also be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu .

Engineering Girls season 2 on Zee 5

Another interesting offering for the viewers on OTT this week is season 2 of the college youth drama Engineering Girls.

First of the series to be streamed on ZEE5 as part of a partnership between ZEE5 and TVF, Engineering Girls 2.0, to be streamed on the platform from August 27,
is a fresh take on modern-day Engineering college drama, set in a girls’ hostel.

Based on the tag line 'Sapnon ki theory, Life ke Practicals’.(theory of dreams, practicals of life), Engineering Girls 2.0 takes viewers through the story of  Maggu, Sabu, and Kiara  as they go through  final year of Engineering.

While Maggu, Sabu, and Kiara are stressing about career, placements and jobs, they don’t want to miss out on one final year of fun, bonding and making forever memories. The new season follows their daily adventures and misadventures, and how they solve their way out of every situation to make their dreams come true, coming together, better and stronger in the end.

Talking about Engineering Girls 2, TVF Founder Arunabh Kumar said, “this show is very special to us as there are a lot of Female Founders and Engineers who are doing some amazing work in STEM fields, but we have rarely seen their perspective and world in mainstream content and Engineering Girls aimed to change that with the 1st season itself. Now with a partner like ZEE5, we hope to take this story forward as we collectively want to bust the stereotype that Engineering means just boys”.

The series has been directed by Apoorv Singh Karki.
