Thalaivii earns Rs 1.25 cr on its opening day in India, Hindi version gets poor response

Notwithstanding the strong buzz created by its promos and trailer, Thalaivi, biopic on life of late Tamil Naidu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, got a lukewarm response at the theatres across India.
Featuring Kangana Ranaut in the titular role of Jayalalithaa and Arvind Swami in the role of MGR, Thalaivi earned Rs 1.25 cr on its opening day across India, far below the expectations of the film trade.
The best collections of the film on opening day came from Tamil Nadu, at
Rs 80 lakh, considering that it is based on the life of the legendary actress and political leader of the state Jayalalithaa.
Thalaivii, which released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, got a poor response for its Hindi version, which released in theatres across North India.
The film earned Rs 20 lakh from Delhi and NCR . The poor collections of the film in North India is being attributed to the film not releasing in the multiplexes in the region due to the decision of the makers to provide for a two week window for release of the film on OTT for the Hindi version. The below average response to the film in Delhi and other regions of North India is also due to the fact that it does not hold much appeal for the people of the region.
The film performed poorly in Andhra Pradesh.
Trade sources said that Thalaivi is expected to get majority of its earnings from Tamil Nadu.
Produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh and directed by Vijay, Thalaivi stars Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut in the role of Jayalalithaa.
Thalaivi also stars South Indian actor Arvind Swami in the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.
A multilingual film, which has been made in Hindi as well as Tamil and Telugu,
Thalaivi will take viewers through the journey of Jayalalitha from a Tamil superstar to one of the most powerful Iron Lady in politics.
The film was earlier scheduled to release in April but was pushed due to the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Thalaivi is the third big release, after Akshay Kumar starrer Bell Bottom and the Amitabh Bachchan Emraan Hashmi starrer Chehre , to release in theatres post the reopening of cinema halls after a prolonged closure due to the second wave of COVID-19.
