By Rajesh Ahuja
Amid the uncertainty at the box office this year, with the rising Covid cases leading many filmmakers to release their cinematic ventures directly on OTT, many established actors as well as rising stars made their mark on the hearts of audiences with their memorable performances .
Actors Ranveer Singh, Abhishek Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal, Sidharth Malhotra, and Abhishek Banerjee impressed viewers with their path-breaking performances and virtuoso acts in films like 83, Breathe into the Shadows, Bigg Bull , Bob Biswas, Sardar udham, Rashmi rocket and Shershah.
The performances by these actors came like a silver lining in the clouds of despair hovering over the film industry during the year.
It was an year which saw Ranveer Singh make a mark as an accomplished actor with his subtle and nuanced portrayal as former Indian skipper Kapil Dev in 83, a film on Indian Cricket Team beating odds to win the 1983 Cricket World Cup by defeating the reining champions West Indies .
Abhishek Bachchan was another actor who made his presence felt in the year 2021 with his performances in the films Bigg Bull and Bob Biswas.
Vicky Kaushal made a mark with his performance in Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham while Siddharth Malhotra bowled over audiences with his freewheeling act in Shershah.
Abhishek Banerjee created a splash with his performance as an indomitable lawyer in Rashmi Rocket.
Ranveer Singh in 83
After impressing audiences with his performances in Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, Ranveer Singh is now getting rave reviews for his performance as former skipper of the Indian Cricket Team Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan's 83, the story of India’s surprise win in the 1983 Cricket World Cup by defeating reining champions West Indies.
In a film that took viewers on a roller coaster ride of emotions as it captured the journey of the then Indian Cricket Team from being underdogs to emerging winners, Ranveer Singh stamped his authority as an actor with his subtle and nuanced performance as Indian skipper Kapil Dev. His perfect enactment of the body language and mannerisms of Kapil Dev floored the audience. It was clearly one of the highlights of the year. Infact, trade experts say that Ranveer Singh's near perfect portrayal of Kapil Dev in 83 is deserving of a National award.
Abhishek Bachchan in Bigg Bull and Bob Biswas
Abhishek Bachchan is a perfect example of an actor imbued with a never say die spirit and resilience , qualities that have seen him spring surprises on the audience with his performances in frilms from time to time.
Just when you think that Abhishek has nothing more to offer to his fans, junior bachchan springs a surprise with one of his performances.
Just when it seems that Abhishek is down and out, he has surprised audiences with a Guru, a Bunty Aur Babli, a Dhoom, a Manmarziyan or a Breathe into the Shadows .
He bowled us over with his masterly act in Mani Rathnam's Guru in 2007 as the fiesty Gurunath Desai, who charts a meteoric rise from his humble middle class roots to becoming india's biggest industrialist by dint of his self confidence and never day die spirit. The remarkable performance by Abhishek Bachchan in the 2007 film is etched in the memory of cinegoers even today.
After impressing with his performance in the 2019 film Manmarziyan , the Netflix film Ludo and the Amazon Prime Video web series Breathe into the shadows, Abhishek Bachchan this year reiterated his acting prowess with the film's Bigg Bull and Bob Biswas.
Bigg Bull, the story of the rise and fall of stock broker Harshad Mehta, saw Abhishek Bachchan come up with another class act, another career defining performances after Mani Rathnam's Guru.
Watching him enact the aggressive Hemant Shah, for whom there are no stops in his journey to become the richest man in the country, in Bigg Bull is a treat.
The swagger in his body language, the smirk in his tone , his self assuredness and his deafening laugh as Hemant Shah reminds one of the Gurunath Desai of Mani Rathnam's Guru. Infact, Abhishek Bachchan is the fulcrum around which the entire film revolved.

With his latest film Bob Biswas, Abhishek Bachchan again surprised the audience with his virtuoso as as a contract killer leading a dual life and wanting to break away from his past.
As the contract killer who has forgotten about his past and unsure about present, Abhishek Bachchan gave a subtle and nuanced performance. He effectively brought out the turmoil in the life of contract killer. Clearly one of the best performances of his career.

Vicky Kaushal in Sardar Udham
After his performance in Uri The Surgical Strike, Vicky Kaushal this year made his presence felt with Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham, a story that revives memories of the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
As Sardar Udham Singh, who takes revenge against the chief perpetrator of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre General O Dwyer, Vicky Kaushal gives a soul stirring performance which won him acclaim from audiences as well as critics.
He made viewers sit up and take notice with his searing intensity as Sardar Udham Singh . Though he does not speak much in the film, he emotes with his eyes, which bring out the searing intensity of the character of Udham Singh. The performance is sure to win him another National Award after Uri The Surgical Strike.

Siddharth Malhotra as Captain Vikram batra in Shershah
Siddharth Malhotra's freewheeling act as Paramveer Chakra awardee Captain Vikram Batra in the film Shershah was another highlight of the year 2021.
While the film opened to mixed reviews, Siddharth Malhotra's spirited act as Captain Vikram Batra got him rave reviews.
Siddharth Malhotra came up with a superlative act as Vikram Batra whose heart bleeds for his nation and who is ready go beyond the brief given to him to fulfill the call for the nation..He was refreshing as an Army officer whose heart beats for his colleagues and subordinates.
Infact, he gave an effortless performance as Vikram Batra. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is Siddharth Malhotra best performance till date

Abhishek Banerjee in Rashmi Rocket
Amid established actors like Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan, actor Abhishek Banerjee sprung a surprise in 2021 with his spirited act in the sports biopic Rashmi rocket. If Tapsee Pannu was the soul of the film as athlete Rashmi who fights against the practiceofGender testing in sports , Abhishek Banerjee was a surprise package as Rashmi's lawyer.
Abhishek Banerjee made his presence felt in the film as the person who is instrumental in convincing Rashmi to fight the case against the association for subjecting her to gender testing and who gives it his all in the legal fight against the authorities, His is a performance to watch out for in Rashmi Rocket and undoubtedly one of the path-breaking performances of the year.
It reminded one of the performance of Pankaj Tripathi in the web series Criminal Justice Behind Closed Doors, streamed on Disney Hotstar last year.
