Delhi cinemas closure puts question mark on release of Hindi films Prithviraj & Attack;multilingual RRR & Radhe Shyam

The closure of cinema halls in Delhi has put a question mark on the release of  films scheduled to hit cinema screens in the coming weeks.

Following the decision of makers of the Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey to postpone its release due to spurt in cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19,  uncertainty looms on release of Yashraj films' Prithviraj,  which is scheduled for release in cinemas on January 21 and Attack,  which is slated to hit cinema screens on January 27.

The decision of the makers of Jersey to postpone release of the film comes after the Delhi government's announcement to shut down cinema halls in the state Following a spurt in Covid-19 cases.

The last 24 hours have witnessed nearly 500 Covid-19 cases,  many of them being related to the Omicron variant of Corona virus.

Following a rise in COVID-19 cases,  the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has ordered the closure of schools, colleges, cinemas and gyms with immediate effect.

The recent days have also witnessed a spurt in Covid-19 cases in many areas of the country,  leading to several state governments imposing fresh restrictions,  including imposition of night curfews. These include  Uttar Pradesh,  Madhya Pradesh and  Haryana .

With Maharashtra also recording  nearly 2500 cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the state government could in the coming days impose more restrictions in the state.

The fresh restrictions imposed in several states is sure to impact theatrical collections in these areas,  forcing the makers of upcoming films to mull a postponement of the film's or deciding to release the film directly on OTT.

Several big budget  films are scheduled for release in the coming weeks like    RRR , Radhe Shyam, Prithviraj ,Attack , Badhai Do , Gangubhai Kathiawadi ,Jayeshbhai Jordaar ,Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 .

While RRR is scheduled to release in cinemas on January 7, Radhe Shyam is scheduled for release on January 14, Prithviraj on January 21 and Attack on January 27.

While the makers of Prithviraj and Attack are likely to postponed these films to a later date,  makers of the multilingual RRR and Radhe Shyam have said that the film's will be released on schedule.

The decision of  makers of  these multilingual films to release them on schedule is due to the fact that collections of  RRR and Radhe Shyam are unlikely to be hit due to closure of cinema halls in Delhi as the bulk of audience of these films comes from South.

However,  any decision of closure of theatres in Maharashtra following a spurt in Covid-19 cases in the coming weeks could force a rethink among the makers on the theatrical release of these films. This is because  a closure of theatres in Delhi and Maharashtra,  two of the largest markets for Hindi films, could impact collections of the Hindi version of RRR and Radhe Shyam.

Earlier in the year,  the second wave of Covid-19 had resulted in the postponement of several big budget films like Bunty Aur Babli2, Satyameva Jayate 2, Sooryavanshi and Haathi Mere Saathi (Hindi version).
