Release of Jersey postponed due to rising Omicron cases, uncertainty looms on release of upcoming films

Amid a spurt in cases related to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in various parts of the country,  the release of the Shahid Kapoor Mrunal Thakur starrer Jersey has been postponed.

Postponement of  Jersey, scheduled for release on December 31, puts a question mark on the release of big budget films scheduled for release in the coming weeks. 

Release of Jersey postponed due to rising Omicron cases 

The decision for the postponement of the release of Jersey comes after the Delhi government announced the shut down of Cinema halls in the state from tomorrow following a sharp rise in Omicron cases.

The makers have decided to postpone the film due to the increasing Covid situation in the country. A new release date will be announced in due course of time!

Delhi yesterday saw the biggest single-day spike in Covid-19 infections in six months  with 331 new cases. The positivity rate - the percentage of samples that return positive -- was above 0.5 per cent for two days, which led the government to issue a  yellow alert.

Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnannuri, Jersey is the story of Arjun Raichand, a thirty six year old cricketer who stopped his cricketing career ten years ago and is  now aiming to play for Indian team.

A remake of Gowtam Tinnannuri's 2019 Telugu film of the same title, Jersey stars Shahid Kapoor as Arjun Raichand while Mrinal Thakur features as his wife .

The film, which has been produced by Allu Aravind,  Aman Gill, Dil Raju and Suryadevara, also features Shahid Kapoor's father  Pankaj Kapur in a key role.

The actor has said that the shooting for the film was held amid the raging Covid pandemic.

'We shot the film amid the raging pandemic. I want to compliment the cast and crew of Jersey for shooting the film in such tough conditions,'he said.

Jersey was earlier scheduled to release in August last year  but it' was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jersey marks Shahid Kapoor's return to the big screen after a long gap.  He was last seen in the film Kabir Singh,  released in 2019.

The postponement of Jersey,  one of the most awaited films of the year,  puts a question mark on the release of the upcoming films like the multilingual film RRR,  Yashraj films' Prithviraj and the Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chadha.

Several big budget  films are scheduled for release in the coming weeks like    RRR , Radhe Shyam, Prithviraj ,Attack , Badhai Do , Gangubhai Kathiawadi ,Jayeshbhai Jordaar ,Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 .
