Bob Biswas; Abhishek in virtuoso act in poignant story of a criminal trying to break away from his dark past

By Rajesh Ahuja

His journey in Bollywood has been a roller coaster ride, filled with hits and misses in equal proportions.

Abhishek Bachchan is a perfect example of an actor imbued with a never say die spirit and resilience , qualities that have seen him spring surprises on the audience with his performances in frilms from time to time.

Just when you think that Abhishek has nothing more to offer to his fans, junior bachchan springs a surprise with one of his performances.

Just when it seems that Abhishek is down and out, he has surprised audiences  with a Guru, a Bunty Aur Babli, a Dhoom, a Manmarziyan, a Breathe into the Shadows or a Bigg Bull.

With his latest film Bob Biswas,  Abhishek Bachchan again surprises you with his virtuoso as as a contract killer leading a dual life and wanting to break away from his past.

Bob Biswas is a poignant tale of a contract killer trying to break away from his dark past

Streaming on Zee5,  Bob Biswas is a spin off from the 2012 Sujoy Ghosh's film Kahaani which featured the character of Contract killer Bob Biswas.

The story of the film starts with Bob Biswas (Abhishek Bachchan) coming out of a eight year coma which has resulted in his forgetting past events of his life.

Even as Bob Biswas begins leading normal life with his wife Mary(Chitrangada Singh), daughter Mini(Samara Tijori) and son Benny(Ronith Arora) , his shady and dark past continues to haunt him.

Bob resumes his old job as an insurance agent, but  his dark past refuses to leave him.  The story takes us through the journey of Bob Biswas, who is unable to recall events of his past life, in his efforts to turn a new leaf and leading a peaceful life with his family.

The film shows that despite his efforts to stay away from his shady past, Bob Biswas finds himself getting unknowingly sucked into the Kolkata underworld , world of ruthless drug dealers and corrup policemen.

Taking advantage of his loss of memory,  two corrupt policemen - Jishu (Bhanu Uday Goswami) and Kharaj (Vishwanath Chatterjee), in collusion with a drug Cartel,  hand over to Bob Biswas the job of killing people belonging to a rival gang

A veteran pharmacist Kali Krishna Paul (Bengali actor Paran Bandopadhyay ) helps Bob get back into the life of crime that he left behind.

Even as Bob carries out the killings,  he finds himself wondering whether he is doing the right thing.

In a way, Bob Biswas is a poignant story of a criminal trying to break away from his dark past and lead a normal life with his family. In one of the scenes, Bob Biswas suggests to his wife Mary that they settle down far away from the City of Kolkata in Darjeeling and lead a peaceful life there.

Debutant director Diya Annapurna Ghosh ably carries forward the legacy of her father Sujoy Ghosh,  who gave us slick thrillers like Kahaani and Kahaani 2.

Bob Biswas may not be a patch on Kahaani but it endears you with its poignant tale that effectively brings out the turmoil raging in the heart of contract killer Bob Biswas to somehow break away from his dark past and lead a peaceful life with his family.

Abhishek Bachchan comes up another virtuoso act as contract killer Bob Biswas.  As the contract killer who has forgotten about his past and unsure about present,  Abhishek Bachchan gives a subtle and nuanced performance.  He effectively brings out the turmoil in the life of contract killer.  Clearly one of the best performances of his career.

As Bob Biswas' wife Mary , who is understanding of the turmoil going through the mind of her husband, Chitrangada makes her presence felt.  She comes across as endearing as Mary.

Samara Tijori is effective as his daughter Mini.

A highlight of the film is Bengali actor Paran Bandopadhyay as pharmacist Kali Krishna Paul,  lovingly called Kali Da,  who helps Bob Biswas get back into the life of crime that he has left behind.

The rest of the cast,,including Tina Desai as inspector Indira Verma, Purab Kohli as drug dealer Bubaai and Bhanu Uday Goswami as the policemen who hires Bob Biswas for killings, lend able support.

In short, Bob Biswas is a poignant tale of a contract killer trying to break away from his dark past with brilliant performances by Abhishek Bachchan and Paran Bandopadhyay.

My Rating; 3/5
