Drop in collections of Bell Bottom on Mon, film earns Rs 14.90 cr in 5 days

By Rajesh Ahuja

After a sharp rise in earnings of Akshay Kumar starrer Bell Bottom on Sunday,  there was a sharp drop in  collections of the film  on Monday.

After a jump in collections on Sunday to Rs 4.50 cr on Sunday,  there was a significant drop in collections on Monday to Rs 1.90 cr.

Though the drop in collections was not much in areas like Delhi and NCR and Kolkata,  there was a considerable drop in areas like Gujarat.

With the earnings of the film on Monday,  The total earnings of the film in first five days is Rs 14.90 cr.

Collections for the film are expected to drop further in the coming days.

Trade experts say that the earnings of the film in its opening week are likely to be at around Rs 19 cr to Rs 20 cr, which is far below the expectations of the film trade which had been looking at opening  week collections of around Rs 40 to Rs 50  cr.

Collections of Bell Bottom drop on Monday

After an average run in the first three days, collections of the film had recorded a sharp rise in Sunday to Rs 4.50 cr. The rise in collections was attributed to the Raksha Bandhan festival .

After recording box office earnings of around Rs 3 crore on opening three days,  the film witnessed a sharp jump in its collections on Sunday to nearly Rs 4.5 crore.

A jump in collections of the film was recorded on Sunday in several circuits like Delhi and NCR,  Punjab,  Kolkata and  Hyderabad.

Bell Bottom,  the first big starrer to release in theatres post pandemic, has been  Touted in trade circles as a film that would draw audiences back to the cinemas after a prolonged period of shutdown of theatres due to Covid.

However, Bell Bottom had earned  averages figures  of Rs 2.75 cr to Rs 3 crore in first three days   of its release. The collections saw a sharp jump on Sunday to Rs 4.50 crore, taking its  earnings on the  opening weekend to 13 crore.

Though  the  collections of Rs 13 crore crore for the film in the first weekend is far below the expectations of the film trade, Trade experts attribute the low average earnings of the film to the fact that theatres across India are currently operating at just 50 percent of occupancy.

Moreover,  theatres in Maharashtra,  a key market for Hindi films, continue to be closed due to threat of Delta variant of covid. Trade experts attribute the less than expected box office numbers of the film to the closure of cinema halls in Maharashtra,  a region which contributes a big chunk to the theatrical revenue for a Hindi film.

Further,  since cinema halls in many states are recording low occupancy in late evening and night shows due to threat of Covid-19, this  has invariably impacted the collections for the film.

Bell Bottom is the first  big starrer to release in theatres after a gap of nearly 17 months.

Promos and trailer of Bell Bottom have  generated tremendous buzz among cinelovers ahead of its release. Bell Bottom released  on 800 to 900 screens across the country,  including 125 screens in Delhi and NCR.

The coming weeks will also witness the release of  big starrers Chehre,  a psychological thriller featuring superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi in the lead, and Thslaivi, biopic on life of late Tamil Naidu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Chehre, whose scheduled release in March had to be postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19,  is scheduled to hit theatres on August 27 while Thslaivi will hit theatres on September 10.

An unprecedented surge in covid cases in the country in March  resulted in  makers of mega starrers Haathi Mere Saathi, Bunty Aur Babli2, Chehre, Sooryavanshi and Satyamev Jayate 2 postponing release of these films till a later date.

The Covid situation  adversely impacted the earnings of the films released in theatres during the period,  including Roohi, Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Saina.

An Espionage thriller,  Bell Bottom is about a officer from the secret service (code named  Bell Bottom) orchestrate an operation to rescue several people held hostage by four terrorists on a flight. One of the most awaited films this year, Bell Bottom has been directed by Ranjit M Tewari and produced by Pooja Entertainment and Emmay Entertainment.

Bell Bottom stars Akshay Kumar in the lead with Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta and Huma Qureshi in other prominent roles.

The film was earlier scheduled to release on July 27. However,  due to uncertainty on reopening of theatres,  Akshay Kumar announced that the film will release in cinemas on August 19.

The news of the film's theatrical release has cheered the industry as well the audiences.
