By Rajesh Ahuja

One has heard of various glorious stories of struggles by legendary actors of Indian cinema in pursuit of success in the Mumbai film industry . However,  not much has been heard or read about the various treacheries and gambles by these stars to make a place for themselves on the Bollywood skyway.

The new webseries Jubilee being streamed on Amazon Prime Video take a look at the various risks taken by the pioneers of the film industry to establish a place for themselves in top ranks of the film world and in the hearts of cinelovers.

Jubilee is a gripping tale on the dark side of Bollywood's Golden Era

Created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen, Jubilee is a poetic tale woven around an ensemble of characters and the gambles they're willing to take, in pursuit of their dreams, passion, ambition and love.

Set in an India which had taken its incipient steps on the path of development after Independence,  Jubilee narrates the story of various artists, filmmakers and technicians as they struggled to make a name for themselves in the initial years of Bollywood.  It's is the story of their dreams,  passion and love for theatre and cinema which laid the foundations for Bollywood.

Jubilee takes viewers through the 40s Era in Bollywood which saw the beginning of the Talkies cinemas. Revolving around a matinee idol called Madan Kumar,  the series shows how the burning desire of a commoner Binod Das to become the industry heartthrob leads him to indulge in deciet and treachery with disastrous consequences.

Srikant Roy(Prosenjit Chatterjee) of Roy Talkies , which is on the verge of closure, is looking for Madan  Kumar, the lead star of his next film,  with which he hopes to revive the fortunes of his studio. However,  Jamshed Khan(Nandish Singh Sandhu) , the person who is chosen to play Madan Kumar goes missing mysteriously.

Roy zeroes in on his spot boy and confidante Binod Das(Aparshakti Khurana) to play Madan Kumar.  Overnight,  Binod Das finds himself catapulted from a commoner to becoming a heartthrob of millions. However,  in course of his climb on the ladder of success,  Binod finds himself confronted by some dark secrets of his past with dangerous consequences.

Jubilee is a story told with a lot of heart with painstaking details and nuances of the Bollywood golden Era captured in the series to perfection.  Watching the series instantly transports one to that glorious Era of Bollywood that gave to Indian cinema legends like Prithviraj Kapoor,  Ashok Kumar,  Raj Kapoor,  Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Guru Dutt. For this , the series director Vikramaditya Motwane deserves to be complemented.

The series boasts of grand production values with the ambience and setting of that period beautifully captured on the screen. The series has a pristine quality about it which brings alive the charm and allure of the Golden Era which laid the foundations of Bollywood.

The Screenplay is extremely gripping and keeps one glued to the proceedings.

Another USP of the series are its performances.  Aparshakti Khurana proves his mettle as an actor with a once in a lifetime performance as Bonod Das. What impresses about him is the understated and nuanced act as Binod Das with his various complexities and insecurities.

Prosenjit Chatterjee impresses with his performance as Srikant Roy. Aditi Roy Hyderi is brilliant as Sumitra Roy. She perfectly brings out the vulnerabilities of Sumitra Kumari.

Sidhant Gupta comes up with a natural act as Jay Khanna. He comes across as charming and adorable. Wamiqa Gabbi is endearing as Nilofer Qureshi.

Nandish Singh Sandhu is competent as Jamshed Khan. Ram Kapoor is brilliant as Shamsher Singh  Walia

Rest of the cast, including Arun Govil, Shweta Basu Prasad and Sukhmani Lamba lend able support.
