Despite their on screen rivalry,  Dilip Kumar and Pran were friends  in real sense of the word, says Saira Banu

Their on screen rivalry in films like Ram Aur Shyam, Aadmi and Dil Diya Dard Liya may have been a subject of discussion among cinelovers in the 1960s but off the screen, legendary actors Dilip Kumar and Pran were friends in the real sense of the word.

Going down memory lane,  Dilip Kumar's wife and Bollywood actress Saira Banu recalled how once Pran braved a raging storm to attend Dilip Sahib's Nikaah (marriage) with her.

In a post on Instagram,  Saira Banu recalled that Dilip Sahib once narrated a fond memory of his friendship with Pran.

'Sahib himself quoted about Pran Sahib.  Recalling a fond memory,  he (Dilip Kumar) stated that "The most memorable demonstration of his (Pran) care and effective for me was when he braved a storm In Srinagar, from where he determinedly took a flight to Delhi,  when all other passengers has wisely decided not to board the flight.  But Pran took a flight to Bombay to reach my house before the 'baraat' left for Saira's house. He hugged me again and again without uttering a word. "

'I also recall Sahib's sheer joy when Pran Sahab managed to attend our Nikaah despite a raging storm and speculations to the contrary.  There he stood,  happy and content for his dearest friend on his wedding day. After years of teasing and urging Sahib to marry  'Tu Shaadi Kyun Nahin Karta'(why don't you get married) , on our wedding the long awaited wedding day had arrived for Pran Sahab,'Saira Banu recalled fondly.

Saira Banu said that Pran Sahab and Dilip Kumar remained close till the very end

'Dilip Sahib always spoke very highly of Pran Sahab, 'she said.

Dilip Kumar's strong friendship with Pran was in sharp contrast to their rivalry on screen with most of their films together seeing them in conflict with each other.

Recalling a quote from Dilip Kumar on the on screen rivalry between him and Pran, Saira Banu said, 'at work,  we were invariably pitted against each other-our characters were always caught in a conflict over something or the other. It used to be very amusing for onlookers to watch the change that would come over him when he faced the camera with me in the frame after all the friendliness and effective that they had seen a while ago between us. '

It was fine with me and fine with him because we liked each other's company and respected each other as artists. '

Known as one of the greatest villains in the history of Indian cinema,  Pran  , who worked as antagonist in several films in the 60s and 70s, featured alongside Dilip Kumar in several films including Ram Aur Shyam,  Madhumati, Aadmi and Dil Diya Dard Liya.
