Unprecedented rush for Spider-Man No Way Home seen as sign of revival of film business

The unprecedented ticket sales for the Hollywood film Spider-Man No Way Home and the huge rush for advance booking for the film is being seen as a welcome start of the Winter season for the film exhibition sector and a sign of the revival of the film business in the country.

Multiplex chains across the country have reported a huge rush in advance booking for Spider-Man No Way Home, which releases in cinemas across the country today. 

While the PVR group of cinemas reported a safe of record 1,00,000 tickets within 24 hours of opening of advance booking at the various PVR multiplexes across India,  the INOX group reported sale of 1,50,000 tickets within 24 hours of opening of advance booking.

Infact, 90 per cent of shows for the film on the weekend are almost booked in Mumbai while Delhi has reported booking of 90 per cent of the tickets for the film on the weekend. Cities like Hyderabad and Chennai have also reported sale of over 90 per cent of tickets for the weekend.

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) announced that as a result of the massive response to the advance ticket sales for Spider-Man No Way Home, Cinema Chains and Independent Cinemas are experiencing second busiest advance ticket sales for a single movie title in the entire history of cinema exhibition.

It also is the single busiest advance ticket sales, since cinemas started reopening in October 2020.

 Cinema Chains and Owners have welcomed the start of the Winter 2021 season, kick started  by Spider-Man No Way Home.

Release of Spider-Man No  Way Home will be followed by a slew of blockbuster films in multiple languages, including Pushpa on 17th December, The Matrix Resurrection on 22nd December, 83 on 24th December, Jersey and The Kings Man on 31st December, RRR by SS Rajamouli on 7th January, 2022, THE 355 also on 7th January, Bheemala Nayak in Telugu on 12th January, Valimai in Tamil along with Radhe Shyam in Telugu on 14th January, Prithviraj from Yash Raj on 21st January, Attack on 28th January, Badhai Do on 4th February, Acharya in Telugu on 4th February, Shabaash Mithu on 4th February and also Moonfall on 4th February.

With big films lined up for release in almost every subsequent week in the coming months,  the Big Screen is back.'

Sharing the huge optimism on the revival of the film exhibition industry, Mr. Kamal Gianchandani, President MAI said“With cases falling, vaccinations rising, almost all major markets permitting theatres to operate at 100 per cent capacity, and big crowd pulling titles, in multiple languages, being released this entire winter and next summer, what we kept saying during the pandemic, has come true – we are keeping our word, The Big Screen is Back”

A few weeks ago,  Sooryavanshi, released in theatres on Diwali, marked the start of a revival of film business with audiences thronging to the theatres in huge numbers to watch the Akshay Kumar Katrina Kaif starrer.

Though subsequent Bollywood films like Bunty Aur Babli2, Satyameva Jayate 2, Antim The Final Truth, Tadap and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui failed to recreate magic of Sooryavanshi,  the release of Spider-Man No Way Home has again witnessed a surge in audience footfalls to the theatres.

Trade experts are optimistic that the euphoric response  from cinelovers will continue with films scheduled for release in the coming weeks,  including Pushpa, 83, Jersey, RRR , Radhe Shyam, Prithviraj ,Attack , Badhai Do , Gangubhai Kathiawadi ,Jayeshbhai Jordaar ,Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 .
