A dream that remained unfulfilled:when Dev Anand dreamt of making film with Shirley Mclean

By Rajesh Ahuja

It was a dream, among the many dreams of legendary star Dev Anand, that unfortunately remained unfulfilled.

Dev Anand,  who gave to Indian cinema several masterpieces like Guide and Kaala Bazaar, once dreamt of making a film with Hollywood star Shirley Mclean as a US India co production.

Dev Anand dreamt of making a film with Hollywood star Shirley Mclean

This fact was revealed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar  Kapur.

Shekhar Kapur further revealed that renowned writer Pearl S Buck had even started writing the script of the film.

Sharing a throwback picture of Shirley Mclean and Dev Anand on Instagram, Shekhar Kapur said, 'when Shirley Mclean, one of the top Hollywood stars of that time,  and our very own star Dev Anand, were dreaming to make a film together as a US India co production.

And guess who is not in the picture? Pearl S Buck, the best selling international author of that time...with books like The Good Earth...Pearl had started to write the script. '

'The film unfortunately never happened...like so many amazing films that remained a dream.,'Kapur said.

Shekhar Kapur further revealed that Dev Anand was extremely excited when he made internationally acclaimed film Elizabeth.

'But the Dream and the passion of Dev Anand remained on and passed on to future generations....and when I made Elizabeth,  Dev Anand was the first to call me and was very excited that his nephew had done what he dreamt about,'Kapur said.

Hailing legendary stars like Dev Anand as pioneers of their time, Shekhar Kapur, however,  lamented that filmmakers today have become intert to the immense contribution they can make to international cinema.

''The film folks of that Era were pioneers and thought that nothing was impossible... but somehow Indian films have now become inert... forgotten the immense contribution they can make to international cinema,'Shekhar Kapur said.

It is notable that Shekhar Kapur is the nephew of Dev Anand.  Kapur made the National award winning film Bandit Queen and the internationally acclaimed film Elizabeth.

The film was nominated for several awards, including the Academy award for Best Actress or Cate Blanchett.  It went on to win the BAFTA award for best Actress and the Golden Globes award for best actress for Cate Blanchett.
