Much has been written about the professional rivalry between legendary actors Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor,  part of the famous 'Trio' of Bollywood in the Golden Era.

However,  beneath the professional rivalry between the two superstars lay a deep sense of bonding and camaraderie that was reflected in both of them taking pride over the achievements of each other as also their concern over each other's well being.

Dilip Kumar's wife Saira Banu went down memory lane to recall memories of Raj Kapoor expressing his joy over Dilip Kumar's cinematic achievements as also that of Dilip Kumar's deep concern for the well-being of his 'friend ' Raj Kapoor.

Despite their professional rivalry, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor took pride in each other's achievements

In this regard, Saira Banu recalled that Dilip Kumar rushed from London on hearing of cardiac stroke of Raj Kapoor.

'Sahib was in London to attend a felicitation by the President when Raj Ji suddenly had a cardiac stroke and was admitted to the Apollo hospital in Delhi. The very day, Dilip Sahib returned to India, took a flight to Delhi and was Immediately rushed to the hospital.

He said to Rajji 'I have just come back from Peshawar and brought back the 'khushboo' of chapli kababs to tempt you. We will go together and walk through the bazaar as we used to and enjoy the kebabs and roti. Raj, wake and stop acting.  I know you are a great actor . But you have to take me with you to the courtyard of the house in Peshawar.' Dilip Sahib's voice was now choking and tears were streaming down as he spoke to his dearest friend,  lying unconscious on the bed,'Saira Banu recalled.

Talking about the close friendship between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor,  Saira Banu said, 'Raj Kapoor and Dilip Sahib loved each other in the same measure as they loved their own siblings, but they both shared the thoughts, emotions and secret aspirations more with each other than anyone in their respective families. '

Despite their professional rivalry,  they took pride in the achievements of each other.

'Of course, they had their professional rivalry,  and it would have been abnormal if they did not compete as professionals,  but the beauty of it was that they hated to see each other fall and falling from their positions as 'Superstars'.

They were immensely proud of each other in a loving way. For instance,  on the release of 'Shakti', Rajji send a huge bouquet of roses to Sahib with a little note that said, 'long live the king','Saira Banu said in a post on Instagram.

Dilip Sahib and Raj Kapoor were childhood friends. They were both born in Peshawar,  their native city and as they grew up they studied at Khalsa College in Bombay. Later on, they spend days in their formative years at Bombay Talkies where they worked under the scrutinizing care of stalwalike Devika Rani, the owner,  Mr Shashadhar Mukherjee,  producer,  and the elite company of superstar Ashok Kumar.

Legendary actors of Indian cinema,  Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor were partof the 'Trio' of  superstars- Dilip Kumar,  Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand- who ruled the film industry during the 50s and the 60s.
