Four decades ago internationally acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur made his debut in Bollywood with Masoom, a heart touching story of a couple whose blissful married life is shaken after a revelation of the husband's affair and his child from his extra marital relationship.
Over the years, Masoom , which won a lot of critical acclaim for its story, direction and performances , has become a classic and an iconic film for several generations of cinelovers.
As Shekhar Kapur works on his next film Masoom The Next Generation, he feels that it is the simplicity of story telling in his debut film Masoom that has endeared it to cinelovers from successive generations.
Shekhar Kapur says that simplicity of story telling has made Masoom a much watched film for generations of cinelovers |
Shekhar Kapur, who recently watched Masoom for the second time after its release in theatres four decades ago, says that the reason people from generation after generation have watched Masoom again and again is because the film has grown over time.
'I forced myself to watch the film(Masoom) the other day. Have not seen it since the day I saw it in theatres after its release. I wanted to understand why the film is being watched by generations..why after 40 years, are people still watching it, sobbing and then watching it again and again? What makes a film live on for Generations?
It was the simplicity of the story that got me...there was no attempt to force the audience into an emotion..no attempt to force the drama..the film just flowed..maybe I didn't know better, Maybe if I was an experienced filmmaker, I would have tried harder to control the audience's mind,'Shekhar Kapur said.
'If so, thank GOD for that naivety. For the film allows the audience, gives space to the audience to find themselves in the film, in the story, in the characters.
Now I know why the film us being watched again and again after 40 years.. for you are not watching the same film..the film is growing with you. The film a.lows you to reinterpret the film from who you are now.. as compared to the film you watched 30 years ago,'Shekhar Kapur.
Shekhar says that he hopes to bring the same simplicity to his next film Masoom The next Generation.
'And I hope to bring the same simplicity, the same naivete (if I can call it that) in my next film Masoom The next Generation, 'the filmmaker said.
Released in 1983, Masoom is the story of a couple Indu and DK whose married life is shattered after revelation of the husband's affair and a child from that relationship.
The film won a lot of critical acclaim. It won six Filmfare awards, Including for Best film(critics), Best actor for Naseeruddin Shah ,best music director for R D Burman and Best lyricist for Gulzar.
