He may have been the heartthrob of millions of cinelovers for his dashing action hero and his charming and endearing lover boy persona but legendary actor Dharmendra himself drew inspiration from Bollywood icon Dilip Kumar.
'Dilip Sahib (Dilip Kumar) was the beacon of light in Dharam ji's life, 'Dilip Kumar's wife and yesteryear's Bollywood actress Saira Banu reveals.
In a post on Instagram, Saira Banu said that it was from Dilip Kumar that Dharmendra drew inspiration to become an actor.

'In 1952, Dharmendra Ji traveled from Ludhiana, Punjab to Bombay after seeing Shaheed, which touched a deep emotional chord within him. He definitely wanted to meet Dilip Sahib whose acting had set him on fire,'Saira Banu said.
Talking about Dharmendra's first visit to Dilip Kumar's house, Saira Banu said, 'right after he arrived in Bombay, he boldly took the step of looking for Sahib's house at Bandra, Pali Mala.
Fortunately, he found the house and no one stopped him on the gate. He entered, went up the stairs and stopped by the entrance of a room where he found a fair, slim and handsome man asleep on the sofa. He stood there, admiring Sahib, his idol, right in front of him. Suddenly Sahib woke up and called his staff, and Dharam ji bolted downstairs. '
Six years later, when he returned to Bombay for the Filmfare's Talent contest, Dharmendra sought an appointment to meet Dilip Kumar through his sister Farida., who was with Femina.
Dharmendra's meeting with Dilip Kumar marked the beginning of a long association between the two legendary actors.
'Sahib spoke to him like an elder brother, full of love and adoration. Dharam ji listened to him, spellbound as Sahib spoke in English, Punjabi and Urdu I a soft, refined voice. It was a chilly night outside, and Dharam ji was in a cotton shirt. Seeing him shiver, Sahib swiftly pulled out a sweater for him to wear on his way home.
Since then, Dharam ji has always walked into Sahib's house with ceremony or appointments. Be it midnight, or the day, Sahib always welcomed him. He became the beacon of light in Dharam ji's life when stardom and success came to him and he did not know how to handle them,'Saira Banu said.
Dharmendra's idolize for Dilip Kumar is evident from his statement that 'this is the only photograph I have in my house that I see everyday besides the photographs of my parents and my sons.'
'When I was working with Saira , I used to tell her jokingly, "I am in competition with Saira for the love of Yusuf Sahib, 'Dharmendra said.
Considered the 'He Man' of Hindi cinema for his dashing action hero persona, Dharmendra is among the most handsome Indian actors of his time.
Regarded as one of the most successful actors in the history of Indian cinema,
Dharmendra has worked in over 300 films in a career spanning over six decades.
