Dil Bekaraar; this nostalgic trip to life in the 80s has an old world charm about it.
By Rajesh Ahuja
In this age of hi tech, where social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are the prime mediums of communication , where the market is flooded with media channels and digital platforms dishing out a diverse range of shows and where face to face exchange of sweet nothings between a boy and a girl has been replaced by messaging and whatsup, many of us yearn for the days of yore when life was charming, beautiful and uncomplicated and when our judgement of the world around us was not clouded by the plethora of news channels, each of them bringing to us their perspective of the news and happenings.
For many of us who have grown up watching the charming and halcyon life in the 80s where letters, telephones and telegrams were the only means of communications; where the National channel Doordarshan was our only window to the world around us, providing us news in its original and unadulterated form and where the meeting of eyes and exchange of sweet nothings was the sole means of developing of a sweet romance between a boy and a girl, the new web series Dil Bekaraar takes us on a nostalgic life in the charming 80s.

The most mature and sensible among their daughters is Debjani Thakur (SahherBambba), a forward looking woman who is a news anchor at the state owned DeshDarshan, a much coveted post in the 80s. The fiery Debjani is a , champion of all the stray animals on Hailey Road.

Director Habib Faisal transports us into the charming and beautiful life of the 80s when the digital revolution had not made Inroads into the communication space between individuals.
The story of the Thakur family and the romance between Debjani Thakur and Dylan Shekhawat has an old world charm about it.
The writer and the director come up with an authentic portrayal of the 80s era - the age of the landlines telephones, telegrams, the good old Doordarshan and the Gold Spot.
The biggest USP of the series is however the performance by the cast, especially the veteran actors Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon and Padmini Kolhapure
Raj Babbar is brilliant as retired justice L N Thakur who spends his days anxiously, filled with worries and trepidation on the future of his five daughters.
As his wife Mamta, Poonam Dhillon is effective. Padmini Kolhapure too is impressive as Mamta's Devrani who is constantly hyper and overdramatic , constantly complaining about her husband's affair with his maid and her son’s pusilanimity.
Sahher Bambbaa comes up with a spirited appearance as the fiery, progressive and forward looking Debjani who displays maturity and intelligence way beyond her age. He interactions with Akshay Oberoi are a treat to watch.
After a dignified portrayal as Babar wife in The Empire, Sahher Bambbaa again makes her presence felt. She is definitely a face to watch out for in Bollywood
Akshay Oberoi is effective as the cocky journalist Dylan Shekhawat. He has a sparkling chemistry with Sahher Bambbaa in Dil Bekaraar.
Medha Shankar comes up with a breezy portrayal as Eshwari Thakur. She looks cute and adorable as Eshwari.
The rest of the cast, including Tej sapru, Suhel Seth and Sukhmani sadana lend able support
In short, Dil Bekaraar is a slice of life web series that takes you on a nostalgic trip to the charming and beautiful life in the 80s. The series has an old world charm about it.
