Special Ops 1.5 is an engrossing thriller about the murky world of Honey trapping |
Two years after Special Ops, an edge of the seat Espionage thriller that saw Kay Kay Menon aka RAW officer Himmat Singh launch a worldwide hunt for the sixth perpetrator of the Parliament attack with help from his secret agents in various parts of the world, makers of the iconic show have come up with the prequel of the show Special Ops 1.5.
While Special ops took us through the thrilling journey of Himmat Singh in course of his pursuit of the mastermind of the Parliament attack, Special ops 1.5 takes us through the events that went into making Himmat Singh the espionage agent he is today.
The Himmat Singh story is narrated through eyes of Abbas Sheikh (Vinay Pathak), his confidante in the Delhi police.
An official known for his iconoclastic ideas like the one about there being a sixth terrorist involved in the Parliament attack, Himmat Singh is shown to ruffle many a feather in his establishment, resulting in his brief suspension..
But as they say it is difficult to keep an accomplished official like Himmat away from the scene of action. So after incidents of honey trapping of two senior Indian officials in Russia and Colombo, Himmat Singh is called in action to prevent government data from being compromised..
While an Indian diplomat in Colombo (Santanu Ghatak) is honey trapped by a beautiful medical intern (Aishwarya Sushmita), a Navy commodore (Vijay Vikram Singh) finds himself honeytrapped after succumbing to the charm of a Russian "sparrow" (Maria Ryaboshapka) and finds himself hopelessly pushed to the wall.
Himmat Singh's assignment brings him in confrontation with his former colleague Maninder (Adil Khan) now turned rogue. Himmat is joined in the mission by his former collegemate Vijay (Aftab Shivdasani) married to another of his collegemates(Gautami Kapoor). The mission involves a clash between Himmat Singh, Vijay and Maninder that leaves Himmat Singh with a scar that alters the course of his life.
In between his mission, we are also provided a glimpse into Himmat's love affair with a journalist.
The screenplay of the web series is engrossing and keeps viewers constantly on the edge of their seats. In fact the curiosity levels and the thrills in Special ops 1.5 are a notch above Special ops. The story moves at a fast pace, flitting between Russia, Colombo, Serbia and London. The cinematography is good with the locations coming across as eye filling.
The series, running into four episodes, provides us with an insightful look into the murky world of Honey trapping in the field of international diplomacy used by secret agencies of various countries to ferret out secret of the rival country. The series has all the ingredients that make for an engrossing espionage thriller .
Kay Kay Menon again shines as iconoclastic and sharp witted espionage agent who is always a step ahead of his adversaries. He comes across as dapper as the younger version of Himmat Singh. Adil Khan is impressive as the espionage agent Maninder who has turned rogue. He comes across as a menacing foe with killer looks.
The real surprise of the show is, however, Aftab Shivdasani with his spirited act as Himmat Singh's colleague and collegemate Vijay. Aftab Shivdasani, who makes a comeback to arclights with special ops 1.5, looks cute and adorable.
Like the earlier edition of the show, Vinay Pathak again impresses as Abbas Sheikh, Himmat's confidante in the Delhi police.
The rest of the cast lend able support.
In short, special ops 1.5 is an engrossing thriller that provides deep insight into the murky world of Honey trapping in international diplomacy.
Rating; 3.5/5
