Shahid Kapoor says that he is looking to do films that excite him as an actor |
Speaking at the trailer launch of Jersey on Tuesday evening, Shahid Kapoor said,'as an actor, I am always looking to something new as a character and a story that I have not done before.
I never chose a film for their commercial potential. All you want is to tell a story well. I feel that you should always tell the story that you want to tell. I am doing films that really excite me. '
A remake of Telugu film of the same title, Jersey stars Shahid Kapoor as Arjun Raichand, a 36 year old cricketer who is looking to make a comeback to the sport after a gap of 16 years.
Shahid Kapoor said that after the overwhelming success of Kabir Singh, he was advised to do more films where he plays a college boy.
'After the massive success of Kabir Singh, I was wondering what to do next. I never expected the film to be the overwhelming success it turned out to be. After Kabir Singh, many people suggested that I play a college boy or do an action film.
After Kabir Singh, I heard lot of scripts. Of all the scripts that I heard, the story of Jersey stayed with me. I saw the original film two weeks before release of Kabir Singh. I cried buckets on watching the film. Somewhere deep down it connected with me', Shahid Kapoor said at the trailer launch, which was also attended by the film's female lead Mrunal Thakur , the director Gowtam Tinnannuri and producers Allu Aravind and Aman Gill.
The actor said that he chose the film for its strong and heart touching story.
'The reason I chose this film is that it is an extremely strong story with an extremely strong script and a new fresh character. That for me is the right thing to do,'he said.
This is the second remake done by Shahid after Kabir Singh, which was also the remake of a Telugu film.
Talking about his experience of doing a remake, Shahid Kapoor said, 'at one level, being a part of a remake is helpful as you already know the story. However having done Kabir Singh and now jersey I would say that it is very difficult to do a remake and sometimes tougher to do it than an original. This is because it has to look fresh. It cannot look like copy paste. You have to rediscover it all over again. I feel that doing a remake you have to bring authenticity to the story for the backdrop and for the person you are creating.
In this sense, I would say that this version of Jersey is different from the original. It's the same story but the character has changed . We have taken this film to Chandigarh. Since, the hero is a Punjabi, we made a lot of small changes. His pain, angst and relationships with his wife is very different from the original. '
Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnannuri, Jersey is the story of Arjun Raichand, a thirty six year old cricketer who stopped his cricketing career ten years ago and is now aiming to play for Indian team.
A remake of Gowtam Tinnannuri's 2019 Telugu film of the same title, Jersey stars Shahid Kapoor as Arjun Raichand while Mrinal Thakur features as his wife .
The film, which has been produced by Allu Aravind, Aman Gill, Dil Raju and Suryadevara, also features Shahid Kapoor's father Pankaj Kapur in a key role.
Shahid Kapoor has said that the role in Jersey is something that is close to his heart.
The actor has said that the shooting for the film was held amid the raging Covid pandemic.
The film was earlier scheduled to release in August last year but it' was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jersey marks Shahid Kapoor's return to the big screen after a long gap. He was last seen in the film Kabir Singh, released in 2019.
