He may be known as jumping jack in bollywood with his dance moves in many films in the 70s and 80s but not many people are aware that iconic star Jitendra started off in bollywood as a dancer in a dance troupe in legendary filmmaker V Shantaram's popular 1959 film Navrang.

During an appearance on the Kapil Sharma show on Sony entertainment television , Jitendra said that in his early years in bollywood, he got a small role as a member of a dance troupe in Navrang.

Jitendra was roped in as part of a dance troupe in V shantaram's 1959 film Navrang

Speaking about how he got the role in Navrang, Jitendra said,'those days, my dad had a business of selling imitation jewellery which we sold to several film studios in Mumbai.

In this connection, I used to visit various film studios to deliver boxes of imitation jewellery. This also gave me an opportunity to watch shooting of various films in the film studios. During one such visit to v shantaram's studio where the shooting of Navrang was going on, I asked to be allowed inside the studio to watch the shooting. However, the guards there did not allow me.'

Jitendra said that he was told that if he wanted to see the shooting of the film, he would have to do some work in the movie.

''I was offered role of a prince.  I was on cloud nine that I had got the role of a prince. Next day I dressed up well and hired a taxi to go to the studio. However on reaching the studio I was told that I would be a part of a dance troupe where there were several other princes like me,'Jitendra said.

It is notable that in his initial days, Jitendra was roped in as part of a dance troupe in Navrang. He was also cast as Sandhya's character's double in the film.

Later, he made his Bollywood debut as a lead in Shantaram's Geet Gata Patharon Ne. He later also starred in Shantaram's Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti.

After making his debut in Hindi films with V Shantaram's Geet Gaya Patharon Ne(1964), Jitendra rose to popularity with films like Farz, Humjoli and Caravan, which featured him as a dancing star.

Co-written and directed by V. Shantaram, Navrang, which features  Mahipal and Sandhya in the lead roles,  is noted for its dance sequences with lead actress Sandhya and music by C. Ramchandra.

Navrang also marked the  debut of  Mahendra Kapoor as a playback singer with the song Aadha Hai Chandramaa Raat Aadhi.

As a successful Bollywood star,Jitendra worked in several films,  a majority of them as a lead star.

Infact,  he is among the most prolific actors in the Mumbai Film industry,  having worked in nearly 200 films as a lead actor in a career span of over three decades.
